- What makes a good party a great one is waaaaay more than a smokin' band.
It's also that impossible thing that happened, the funny feeling you got, the madness in the kitchen, the door down the hall you shouldn't have opened, the poignant conversation, the flash of revelation, the kiss that made you feel so far away, and that girl you think you nearly met – then never forgot.
Welcome to The Cat Empire's third album, So Many Nights. Like always, the band is smokin' beyond belief. But this year, well, let’s just say the party has crossed the line between mystery and light. And back. A few times.
The Empire's roots are in the late night jazz clubs of Melbourne, but they've since sprouted wings over the US, Canada, Europe and Asia, where they've negotiated a series of record deals without surrendering a note of their freedom. Like some kind of funky circus troupe, they roll into town, sell twice as many tickets as the previous visit, and a truckload of CDs on the way out.

Metro Record Broken!
On August 6 this year The Cat Empire announced they would attempt to set a new record at Sydney’s Metro Theatre by performing 8 shows over 7 days. Less than 2 months later, the record is smashed, and the first show is still two weeks away. The Empire Horns trumpeter will set his own record that week - playing in both the support band (The Bamboos) and The Cat Empire - Ross Irwin will clock up 16 shows over 7 days.
If that’s not enough good news to start the week, The Cat Empire’s new album ‘So Many Nights’ has debuted at #2 on the national Motorola ARIA Chart, and has already exceeded gold sales of 35,000 albums.
These results are the culmination of a huge week on The Cat Empire calendar, including performances on Rove, Sideshow and Sunrise, playing to tens of thousands of people at Federation Square Melbourne for Grand Final Eve, and completing a host of national media interviews including a co-host on JTV.
On the agenda for the band this week, is an exclusive concert event on Friday October 5, at the gorgeous Iwaki Auditorium (ABC centre) in Melbourne. The one-off show, which sold out in 40 minutes, will see The Cat Empire partnering up with The Australian Youth Orchestra, for what will no doubt prove to be a very memorable experience.

The Cat Empire & Austrialian Youth Orchestra Exclusive Concert
Following the release on Saturday of their new album ‘So Many Nights’, comes the news of a very special partnership between The Cat Empire and The Australian Youth Orchestra.
Over 30 young musicians from across the country (including The Cat Empire 6) will take to the stage for an exclusive concert event in Melbourne, on Friday October 5 at
the Iwaki Auditorium, ABC centre in Melbourne.
The concert is the culmination of one week of workshops between The Cat Empire and The Orchestra. The idea for the collaboration was seeded long ago, and presents a great musical challenge for both band and Orchestra members. The Cat Empire will impart knowledge about their musical style and the nature of improvisation to the orchestra members who are accustomed to more structured playing. A long way from pubs and clubs the band sells out all over the world, this classical environment will also take band members well outside of their usual comfort zone.
The workshop week will be led by The Empire Horns’ Ross Irwin, who has arranged the songs for orchestra, and will conduct the concert.
The event will feature performances of material from The Cat Empire’s new album ‘So Many Nights’, as well as tracks from previous recordings.
It is suspected that we may see members of the Orchestra touring with The Cat Empire early in 2008.
This one off show on FRIDAY OCTOBER 5 is already SOLD OUT.0 Comments 291 weeks
