Special Agent Fox William Mulder (born October 13, 1961), nicknamed "Spooky" Mulder, is a fictional character played by David Duchovny on the 1993-2002 television series, The X-Files. FBI Special Agent Mulder believes in UFOs and a government conspiracy to hide or deny the truth of their existence. With his FBI partner Dana Scully, the two work in the X-Files office, which is concerned with cases with particularly mysterious or possibly supernatural circumstances that were left unsolved and shelved by the FBI. Mulder considers the X-Files and the truth behind the supposed conspiracy that he has made the main purpose of his life. He lives alone near Washington, D.C.
Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully, M.D. (born February 23, 1964) is a fictional character on the FOX television series The X-Files (1993-2002), played by Gillian Anderson. She is an FBI Special Agent, partnered on the X-Files with Special Agent Fox Mulder. They work out of a cramped basement office at FBI headquarters to investigate unsolved cases labeled "X-Files". In contrast to Fox Mulder's credulous "believer" character, Scully is the skeptic, choosing to base her beliefs on what science can prove.Dana Scully is 5'3" (160 cm) and has blue-green eyes. Her work as an FBI agent takes up a major part of her life, and as a result she rarely dates or spends time with friends. She lives in Georgetown, in Washington, DC.
Walter Skinner is a former Marine and a Vietnam War veteran. In the war he once killed a boy at a very short distance, an experience which has scarred him for life. He is married to Sharon Skinner. He has been treated at a sleep disorder clinic, suffering from recurring dreams of an old woman, which may either be a hallucination arising from drug use during Vietnam or a succubus. Skinner's hobbies include jogging, and boxing, the latter of which has been shown in his ability to outfight Mulder and X and to defend himself reasonably well when he was attacked by Alex Krycek and his men.Skinner has a friend named Wayne Federman, a Hollywood screen writer. In the episode "Hollywood, A.D." Wayne writes and produces a movie called The Lazarus Bowl, which is based on an X-File Mulder and Scully investigated.
The Cigarette Smoking Man oversaw Scully's initial briefing on her assignment to the X-Files to debunk the work of FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, as well as her debriefing. The Cigarette Smoking Man also stole the evidence obtained by Mulder and Scully during the show's Pilot episode, and moved it to a secret, underground storage room at the Pentagon. Although uttering only four audible words in the entire 1st season of the show, CSM eventually developed into the series' primary antagonist. The character is most commonly referred to by this description because he is almost always seen chain-smoking Morley cigarettes, and also because like other villains on the show, he has no known real name.CSM's silent presence in Skinner's office early on was always a warning that the shadowy government attempting to discredit Mulder is again keeping an eye on the nonconformist agent.
Deep Throat During the first season of The X-Files, the paternal-like Deep Throat provided Mulder and Scully with information they would have been otherwise unable to obtain, leading to some interesting investigations. Being a member of the then unseen Syndicate, he was in a position to know a great deal of information. Generally, Deep Throat used his power to help Mulder, though without jeopardizing his own security, and so his information was sometimes vague and needed to be decoded by Mulder. Deep Throat felt that the truth that the Syndicate kept secret from the public needed to be known, and he expressed to Mulder that he believed Mulder was the one capable of doing so. However, Deep Throat had at least once provided Mulder with false information in order to divert him, later explaining that he believed the public was just not ready to know some truths.

The X-Files is an American Peabody and Emmy Award-winning science fiction television series created by Chris Carter, which first aired on September 10, 1993, and ended on May 19, 2002. The show was one of the American FOX network's first major hits, and its main characters and slogans (e.g. "The Truth Is Out There," "Trust No One," "I Want to Believe") became pop culture touchstones. The X-Files is seen as a defining series of the 1990s, coinciding with the era's widespread mistrust of governments, interest in conspiracy theories and spirituality, and the belief in the existence of extraterrestrial life.
In the series, FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are tasked with investigating the "X-Files": marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder plays the role of the "believer," having faith in the existence of aliens and the paranormal, while Scully is a skeptic, initially assigned by her departmental superiors to debunk Mulder's unconventional work. As the show progressed both agents were caught up in a larger conflict, termed "the mythology" or "mytharc" by the show's creators, and developed a close and ambiguous friendship which most saw as romantic more than platonic. The X-Files also featured stand-alone episodes ranging in tone from horror to comedy, in which Mulder and Scully investigated uniquely bizarre cases without long-term implications on the storyline. These so-called "monster of the week" episodes made up the bulk of the series.
The show's popularity peaked in the mid-to-late 1990,leading to a theatrical feature film in 1998. In the last two seasons, Anderson became the star as Duchovny appeared rarely, and new central characters were introduced: FBI Agents John Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish). At the time of its final episode The X-Files was the longest running sci-fi show ever on American TV, a title since lost to cable's Stargate SG-1.[citation needed] The show was declared by TV Guide to be the second greatest cult television show and the 37th best TV show of all time.In 2007, TIME magazine included the show on their list of the "100 Best TV Shows of All Time."
