O mnie

Motto
The Young Greens Society at NUI Galway
Ja, o mnie i jeszcze raz ja
The Green Party is an all-Ireland party. But we're different. We aren't left-wing, right-wing, republican or loyalist. We believe in long-term planning, to ensure that the quality of life is good for everyone, both now, and for our descendants. In simple terms:

We Are For...

* More decision-making at Community level.
* Open government.
* A basic income for all citizens.
* Renewable energy and Recycling.
* Full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement
* Workers' Co-ops and small family businesses.
* Emphasis on public transport.
* Non-violent direct action.

We Are Against...

* Pollution of air, sea and land.
* The depopulation of the countryside and over-crowding in the cities.
* Control of industry by large national/multinational companies.
* Nuclear weapons/nuclear power.
* Land/property speculation.
* Both state and paramilitary violence in N. Ireland.
* Exploitation of the third world.
* Exploitation of animals.

Global Warming
We hate it. None Like It Hot! (Although we are enjoying the weather right now...)
The Lisbon Treaty
We have no official opinion. But we want everyone to vote! Make sure you are registered (www.checktheregister.ie), and if you're not, get form RFA2 from the Council website, and bring it to a Garda Station with your passport. It's our future, use your vote.
The Greens in Government
A fair bit done...a lot more still to do! Watch this space, more to come...
Public Transport
It's about giving people more choice, not forcing people out of cars. We know you need them sometimes! But wouldn't it be nice not having to be stuck in traffic for 2 hours a day? LUAS FOR GALWAY!
Civil Liberties
We love them.
College Fees?
Down with that sort of thing!!!
The last time a Minister for Education started talking about the re-introduction of fees one of our members barricaded himself into the Department of Education along with 6 others. In the end, fees weren't introduced. We're considering sending him off to do it again.

  • Student Action on Climate Change campaign

    This Saturday at 1.30pm, Students Union leaders, activists and ordinary people from all over the country will gather in Trinity College for a historic mass gathering, to launch the most important Irish student political movement of a generation – the Student Action on Climate Change campaign. A bus will bring students from Galway on Saturday morning at 9.45am, from the Quad in NUIG. It will return at around 4pm that day.

    People from all colleges will be present at this public gathering, as will many non-students, environmental NGOs and the Minister for Energy, Communications and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan TD. (see attached agenda)

    This is the most important issue of our time, and Ireland is per capita one of the worst emitters of Co2 in the world. We must demand action now before it is too late.

    Speakers at the event are:
    • Eamon Ryan TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources
    • Helen Cantrell from the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition

    Also present will be representatives from
    • Gluaiseacht, the environmental and social justice movement
    • Friends of the Earth

    As well as launching a grass-roots campaign, the event will be a unique opportunity to meet new people, share ideas and build contacts.

    As a student activists, we would like to invite you and your friends to this historic event that will launch the biggest and most important student movement of our generation. Goldsmith Hall is just across the road from the back of Trinity College, next door to Pearse Street Train Station. Signposts will point the way from the entrances of Trinity, and food will be provided.

    A bus will leave NUI Galway (the Quad) at 9.45am and will return from Dublin at 4pm.

  • Upcoming Events

    Hi everyone!
    Just a couple of things to alert you to.

    First, on Saturday October 20th at 1.30pm, students and others from all over Ireland will gather in Trinity College for a public gathering, about action to tackle Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions. Basically we're getting together students and others from all over the country who care about this issue for a historic event -Ireland's first mass gethering of students on what is probably the most important issue in the world. We'll launch a nation-wide campaign for action on this issue, and we are supported by groups like Friends of the Earth and others. A bus - organised by EcoSoc - will be heading down to Dublin for this, so if you're interested let us know and we'll give you the details.

    Second, we're trying to arrange a trip to Dáil Éireann, to see our TDs in action. I've spoken to Paul Gogarty TD about this a couple of times, and he's happy to arrange it for us. We'll get to see the Dáil in action, and a full tour around the building, as well as meeting TDs and Senators. We'll also be doing it jointly with the Maynooth Young Greens who are good fun, so it will be a good day out. Only problem might be, it has to be on a Wednesday. So if anyone is interested, please, let me know, and I will arrange it for a Wednesday that is convenient for most people!

    Third, there is a student conference on in GMIT on Monday and Tuesday, on Environment and Climate Change. As part of that, they are showing the documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth" on Monday evening, and there will be a few of us heading out there. We're going to meet at 6pm on Monday, just outside the Arts Millenium Building, so, join us there if you're interested.

    FINALLY, the Young Greens National Convention is coming up soon, it's being held in the University of Limerick from the 9th to the 11th of November. This will be a good opportunity basically to meet people from all over the country and have a good time, with a little politics thrown in for good measure. If you'd like to get more involved, this will also be a great place to meet people and so on - some of the Green Party elected representatives should be there, including Minister John Gormley. We're hoping travel and accommodation will be subsidised, so it shouldn't break the bank. There will also be an election to the Young Greens National Executive Committee, and if anyone is going I'd really appreciate you voting for me for the Communications Officer position :)

    Thanks for reading this far! Hope to see you soon.
