Self injuring is an addiction, it's a release of feelings you maybe can't explain, once you've started most of the time, there isn't anyway of going back. When you cut yourself, endorphins are released so there is less pain. Self-injuring should be treated as any other kind of addiction, just telling someone they shouldn't harm themselves isn't going to make them stop, to them it's only way they can carry on facing the world.

1 in 3 teenage girls have self-injured in one way or another, this may be cutting, stratching, burning, poisoning, even punching a wall so much until they bleed is self-injuring, whether they mean to or know it or not.

In 2006, 169 under 10 years olds were admitted into hospital for self-injuring.
This may not seem like a large number comparing to the 70'000 teenagers, but these are under 10 year olds, and these are children who've been admitted to hospital for it, imagine how many children there are out there who haven't been admitted into hospital, little 7 years old running around with cuts from ''falling over whilst playing'' and nobody thinking anymore of it.

Every half hour a child/teenager attempts to commit suicide. That's around 19'000 a year, just in the UK.

Every 20 minutes a young person in the UK self-injures as a way of ''coping''.

Over 5000 people in the UK commit suicide each year, and the numbers are rising.

1 in 100 people have suicidal thoughts in any week.

41% of people believe that self injuring is selfish and 55% that it is stupid, and yet over 30% are doing it.

1 in 10 15-16 year olds in the UK have deliberately harmed themselves, and girls are 4 times for likely to do it than boys.

Manchester has the highest rate of self injurers than any other place in Europe.

If you know anybody who has self harmed or are thinking about ending their life, or even if you think that somebody is, talk to them, show them that you care, it can turn their lives around.
