James Connelly
(1868-1916)
Connelly was born in Edinburgh to Irish parents in 1868.
He was born into poverty but through self education he became a socialist and a follower of Marx. Connelly came to Dublin in 1896 and set up the Irish Socialist Republican Party(ISRP).It was to promote the twin ideas of Republicanism and Socialism, it was to his believe that Ireland could only be reformed by banishing British rule.
In November 1913 to protect the strikers he supported he set up the Irish Citizen Army .After the breakout ofWW1 Connelly was opposed to the British use of the working class in the Front lines and his thoughts then turned to rebellion.
Connelly then led his ICA(Irish Citzen Army) in coalition with the IV(Irish Volunteers[forerunners to the IRA]) to the rebellion of Easter 1916 and was one of the seven signatories of the Irish republic. During battle he was wounded in the ankle and his wound turned gangrenous. After the rising was quelled he and eleven others were condemned to death Connelly was murdered by British firing squads in Kilmainham gaol on the twelfth of May 1916 his injury had gotten so bad he had to be strapped to a chair. It was the death of Connelly that most angered the Irish people and fulfilled Pearses prophesy of a blood sacrifice would reawaken nationalism within Irish people.
