FUNDRAISING - Bag packing in Beacon South Quarter Shopping centre - wednesday the 24th of December. Funds to go directly to gold venture organised for may. Please come along, and bring friends! Directions can be found here :
http://www.beaconsouthquarter.com/lo...

A venture trip is likely to take place for all Bronze and Silver participants in May 2009. More details to follow soon.
How many levels to the Gaisce award?
There are three distinctive levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, each getting progressively more difficult, The Gold Award is the highest award a civilian in this state can receive and is given by the President of Ireland herself.
What is involved?
Basically there are four sections to the award, Personal Skill, Physical recreation, Community involvement and Adventure. Since September 08 a fifth section is required for the Gold award. It is a "Residential project". The level of activity and involvment in each section a week depends on which level of the award you are doing, and is outlined in the handbook.
Is it competitive?
You dont compete with other people. This is a personal goal that you set for yourself and it is a personal achievement for you when you receive it.
Whats the purpose of the award?
Primarily its purpose is the personal development of the participant which is fostered by the award.
What is a P.A.L
A P.A.L is a Presidential Award Leader who will monitor your progression through each award programme. It is his/her duty to encourage you and support you through the award. This is your award however and he/she is there to make sure that it is seen through.
TEO
Tar Eis Oir is an organisation which is for Gold award participants and those who have already achieved their Gold Award. It is an outlet for people who can continue to support the Gaisce Award programme, and to socialise with like minded people.

Hi, I was thinking of applying for a gold/silver award and I was just wondering if the 26 weeks/39 weeks has to be all together? It's just because there's a lot more opportunity to get involved during the college term than during the holidays!

Thanks for the information. Two questions though, I never did either the Bronze or the Silver but I was told I could still do the Gold, is that right? Also, how do I go about getting a PAL who's done this all before?

Travelling abroad isn't compulsory, but it is better to do so.

There are requirements set by An Gaisce regarding the venture for the gold award, eg a hike over 4 days and 5 nights, or a long cycle, or swim or something similar, which can all be done in Ireland. Details about the exact distances and times required, etc are available on gaisce.ie.

Don't be afraid to contact your P.A.L. personally if you have questions as they are always there to help you.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey Guys,
If anybody is interested in taking part in a venture around the ring of Kerry and Cork, will you please leave a comment so I can get back to you.
UCC Gaisce and a number of other colleges, including us hopefully, will complete this in August/September together, whatever suits. It should be a lot of craic.
This would be a good opportunity to fulfil the venture of the silver and gold awards.
Nothing has yet been organised so now is your chance to get involved.

There's nothing organised yet, as people here are only making their mind up. I did suggest having it at the end August/start September - alot ofpeople said they had problems going abroad cos of work, etc, so that would solve that prob.
It would probably be around 5 days, I have hiked twice in the area myself, so I have a rough idea of hostels, etc.

Would it be worth while getting in touch with other Gaisce societys?!?

Well I'm helping afew do their gold award, we're thinking of trekking around the Cork/Kerry border for a few days. And there's couple from WIT who might be coming along with us.
Be a bit of craic anyway!!
