- Exploring the experimental possibilities inherent in acid and ambience, the two major influences on home-listening techno during the late '80s, Richard D. James' recordings as Aphex Twin brought him more critical praise than any other electronic artist during the 1990s. Though his first major single, "Didgeridoo," was a piece of acid thrash designed to tire dancers during his DJ sets, ambient stylists and critics later took him under their wing for Selected Ambient Works 85-92, a sublime touchstone in the field of ambient techno. James' reaction to the exposure portrayed an artist unwilling to become either pigeonholed or categorizable

- Aphex Twin (born Richard David James on August 18, 1971 in Limerick, Ireland) is an electronic music artist, credited with pushing forward the genres of techno, ambient, acid and drum and bass. He co-founded Rephlex Records with his friend Grant Wilson-Claridge in 1991.
Recently, rumors have begun surfacing that James is now recording under one or more secret new aliases, such as The Tuss.
In an interview with Japan's Snoozer magazine in 2001, James stated that his favorite instruments were his piano, laptop computer, and the Synton Fenix.
In one of his older interviews in the nineties, Richard said he used Pro Tools and "stuff like that", though he is known to have used Cubase around the time of the "Richard D James" album. In the same interview, he reveals that he has "homemade" equipment which covered software programs written by himself and synthesisers and various hardware devices he built when he was younger.
Richard D. James studied electronics in Cornwall College and Kings

Drukqs Q & A
1) Why " DRUKQS"?
it up to evryone to make their own interpretation.
2) So rumours of your retirement were greatly exaggerated? What made you change your mind?
the old mind was getting really slow and dull so I thought Id get a new one.
3) What have you been doing since Windowlicker was released?
playing around with human embryos that myself and my girlfriend made, before its illegal.
4) Where/when was the album recorded?
All over the place travelling, in some bank vaults and in the bath.
5) Is all the material new?
its the newest music available. actually its a compilation of all the fake aphex tracks found on the world. wide. wank, I didnt write any of them.
6) Will there be any singles?
Yes tomorrow, limited to 1 copy on my hard disk, my friend bought it on ebay which I think is on the internet.
7) The tracks have very bizarre titles, what do they mean?
kwrejgwekrjhwegkwegrkwerjbg
Have you worked with anyone else on this album?
Yeah, at the beginning of 1997 I adopted 3 goats on my farm in scotland and taught them how to write music, I upgraded one of the goats at the end of 98' with a hoof mod and its fucking serious man/woman.
9) Are there going to be any more collaborations with yourself and Chris Cunningham?
Well I think chris is too skinny at the moment and I cant bear working with skeletons so, he has to put on a considerable amount of weight on first.
10) Where did you get the idea for the cover?
while i was djing at the next rephlex party at 93ft east club end of august 2001.
11) Have you been listening to lots of classical music? Is this a sign that you're mellowing in your old age?
I have actually gone deaf from djing and so I cant listen to any music at all, im totally gutted, have learnt how to lip read and I can still mix records by smelling the grooves.
12) What is your dru(g)kq of choice?
what does dru(g)kq mean, I dont understand the question, sorry.
13) Are you planning any live shows? What surprises have you got instore?
Well Im playing on the national lottery in December as they offered me the rollover if nobody won it that week, seriously!
14) Napster, do you have an opinion on them.
Well I should do, I actually wrote the code for the precursor to napster and that bloke knicked it off me, im not bitter though, ive managed to download my entire catalogue off it when it worked, saved myself £'s
15) Is it true that you've written music for adverts under loads of different pseudonyms, can u give ?
yes and other releases, stockhausen, mozart, xenakis, squarepusher, painjerk, parmigiani to name a few.
16) "We'd only ban someone for being boring"...What is the most boring record ever made, in your opinion?
drukqs by eric satie.
17) What is the relationship between Warp and Rephlex?
you dont wanna know man its fucking bad.
1
It is widely known that Radiohead's Kid A was widely influenced by your music, in particular 'Come As you Are'...What do you think of their new stuff and other contemporaries?
Well they widely agreed to pay me 70% of the widely royalties so, Im not complaining.
19) In a recent interview, Grant (Rephlex) pointed out that there are 5 missing records in the Rephlex catalogue...mostly yours...will you ever release them?
Yes, next week, whos Grant?
20) Do you remember life before the internet?
I havent actually gone online yet, is it any good? who are you anyway?
21) What is your favourite gadget?
Oh it would have to be this endoscope I got from LOOT a couple of years ago, it had, had a fair bit of use mind you but its a one off model which can go inside your brain via your nostrils and tickle different regions of your body automatically, its got a USB connection and came bundled with some MAC software, its got a neuro reciever on one bit which can directly pick up various thoughts and signals that happen to be flying around whatever region you happen to be poking, it's so cool man.

APHEX TWIN: Interveiw by Jason Gross 1997
It's hard not to praise someone who's a pioneer and a star in techno/electronica- that's just Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) for you. His music stretches from calmness and medatative sounds to jarring noise and jungle- a pretty fertile and (by his own admission) restless mind who busies himself with other projects under different names. His music is as well-known as his antics- owns and drives a tank around, played sandpaper and a food mixer at a gig, loves to throw out outrageous statements that keep people scratching their heads (you'll find some doozies below). And there he is leering at you with evil grins from the covers of his CD's. All of this would lead you to think the worst about him as a person but believe me, it ain't true. He's a really nice guy despite all of his efforts to appear otherwise.
When I met him, he'd been up for the last 2 days with his new girlfriend. Now here I was with him in his tiny hotel room, interviewing him on his bed. Besides lack of sleep, he also had the misfortune of having his mixer blow out after a show where he only had a half hour (though he was the headliner): this meant that the crowd that night couldn't hear more of his experimental stuff. The set for the show wasn't ideal either- there was a couch on stage which he decided to sit in front of and no toy house for the background as he wanted. For all of this, he was very good natured, chatting about the Internet (he blew out his connection but he's ready to get ISDN because he loves being online) and his amazing lack of carpal tunnel syndrome ('I've been a computer nut for 20 years so I guess I'm immune now') as I fumbled to set up my tape recorder.
PSF: Could you talk about growing up in Cornwall and how that effected you?
I'm sure not but I liked growing up there, being cut off from the city and the rest of the world.
PSF: What about moving out to London?
I went there to go to college originally. I knew I would end up going there and doing something with music.
PSF: What made you want to go into music?
By the time that I went to London, four or five years ago, I knew that I was going to music forever whether it was going to be a career or not. I thought quite possibly that it could be a career but I didn't care either way if it wasn't. I thought it would be a pretty good way of living, an easy life. At the same time, I didn't really care though so I knew I was going to make it. (laughs)
PSF: What kind of music where you listening to that got you interested in doing this?
Nothing really. I got myself motivated to do this. I just loved creating things and making things. That's my motivation for doing this. I do get movitated by listening to other people now but I don't really NEED to do that. I could just lock myself away for days and get inspired by myself. That's my favorite way to do it. It's more like a pure form of motivation when it's all on your own. But you have to wait until you're really bored and you've got nothing to do. That's when it comes out. That's when I reckon it gets good.
PSF: You still find that so now?
Well, it's difficult to get bored now because there's so much going on. There's parties, good friends and a (former) bank in Central London where I was hoping I'd get more work done but it doesn't always work out that way. But I'm not bothered so I'm still getting enough work done. And I've got my laptop which is really good for working. I think that if I had gotten a laptop (before), I would have put out this music a couple of years ago.
PSF: Where does the inspiration for your work come from?
I don't know really. I never really worked that out. If I'm not in the mood to do something, I'm not going to do it. I'll just go and do something else. When I just get something new, I just want to get something out of my system. I know that when I'm feeling in that mood, it's going to be good and I'm going to enjoy it later. Then I can listen back to it0 Commentaren 827 dagen
