- Hi everyone, welcome to the Volunteer Stirling bebo page! This is where all young Stirling volunteers can catch up on whats going on, upcoming events and general volunteering (or non volunteering) banter...
We want to get more 16-25 yr olds from the Stirling area involved in volunteering!
A lot of people don't realise how rewarding volunteering actually is. I know, I used to think it was all about old ladies and fousty charity shops! Thankfully it's not!! I realised that once I started volunteering, and I hope you will too.
I totally agree that doing loads of work for nothing doesn't seem too appealing, but when you find something you love, it doesn't feel like work, the rewards are massive, you're gaining loooaaads of experience and you can think to yourself "oh dear I'm such a wonderful person" coz you are!!
I'm going to sort this page out, whap up some blogs & photo's etc, so you get an idea of the magic things Stirling young people have done!
- Where
- The volunteer centre is situated right opposite Europa Music and within smelling distance of Jimmy Chungs ... Friar St. Drop by anytime or just window shop for a volunteering opportunity!
- Time
- You can sign up with the Stirling Volunteer Centre and give anything from an hour a week to a 30 hours a month! It's totally up to you! Anytime, anywhere.
- *Disclaimer*
- Hope you have fun having a wee swatch at our profile, and feel free to browse through our friends but please be careful when you're looking at any other sites, we can't be held for responsible for anything apart from this one!! So swatch with care amigos!
- To do list...
- go on to the volunteering website for Scotland. Which is handily called www.volunteerscotland.org.uk- you can register and see what tickles your fancy!

Stirling Volunteer Stories...
Abigail
My name is Abigail Christie and I volunteer with Girlguiding UK in the Stirling area.
I am a Brownie guider at 6th Stirling Brownies. I started the girl guides as a brownie.
Myself and the ladies I volunteer with opened our unit in January last year, to enable more girls in the area to have the chance to join brownies to have the fun and education it provides to them, that I found so valuable in my life.
I love the feeling of being involved in the local community, I moved here as a student and it has helped me to intergrate into local life and gives me the feeling that I am giving something back to the community.
Volunteering is so valuable to the community and helps the areas in which we live to thrive.
Lynsey
I volunteer in a local Primary School. I am based in Alan's Primary where I help out in the classroom working with the teacher. I have also been a part of a recent school trip to Edinburgh which involved supervising the children out of school.
I volunteer because there are so many benefits to be gained from it. For example, from my experiences as a volunteer, I have greatly enhanced my CV, as well as broadening my knowledge of the role of a primary teacher. This has been invaluable to me as I intend to become a teacher in the next year.
Alban
When I began my 3rd year studying psychology, I began to look for opportunities outwith my course to find practical experience in the field. When I contacted the Volunteer Centre through the university, the Open Door Project caught my eye as an interesting ecperience for a variety of features, not least of all it's flexibility with fitting what times I could manage around my lecture timetable.
I found the first few meetings very supportive and encouraging, I felt very welcome despite having no prior experience of volunteering. The build up through the buddying sessions was very supportive and at no time have I felt totally independent of the rest of the group and staff at the project should a problem have arisen.
The presentation of further opportunities such as the Mental Health First Aid and ASIST Suicide Prevention courses was also more than I expected when initially contacting the project and I've found that although my time commitments have often got in the way, every moment I've spent with the project has allowed me to gain the experience I was looking for which could tie in with my course and future career opportunities.0 commenti 227 giorni

Stirling Volunteer Stories.
Hey guys, I'm going to start putting up some stuff that young people in Stirling have wrote about their experiences volunteering, if you want something shared then give me a shout!!
David - Cafe Worker/Youth Forum (Programme Liason)
"In July 2005 the Youth Director at the Rock asked me if I would volunteer and I decided to give it a go to see what it was like. I'm still volunteering there nearly 3 years later!
My role in the cafe is to serve at the counter, do the washing up, make tea's, coffee's, hot chocolates and food and talk to the people who come in. In the Youth Forum I help to organise what goes into the activity programme in the cafe, such as band nights and movie nights on Saturday nights, and sports and dance activites during school holidays. I find volunteering a lot of fun and a really worthwhile way to spend my free time."
Faye - British Red Cross (BRC and the SDAMH (Stirling District Association of Mental Health)
BRC: "I was working both in the youth education sector/office and out in the community with a variety of different school and youth groups. In the office I was involved in a variety of projects and preparation work however most of the time I was establishing peer education and school speaker resources on humanitarian issues such as HIV/AIDS, child soldiers and climate change.
Out of the office I was facilitating peer education workshops, working with secondary school students to create an assembly day about HIV/AIDS. Activities included designing posters/information leaflets, cartoon strips, coming up with fundraising ideas and even making a film written and produced by the students. As a school speaker I delivered assemblies to students from age 5 on specific topics.
SDAMH: I befriended a 13 year old teenager with mental health problems. Together we did a range of activities friends do together, including going to the cinema, bowling, walking, cycling and our favourite...swimming followed by a trip to the ice cream shop at the university
I volunteer as it provides me with a variety of challenges, the opportunity to learn things about myself, others and certain skills I would otherwise not have the opportunity to obtain. Oh and of course it's unbelievably rewarding and enjoyable!
Bethany
"Currently, I'm teaching English as a Foreign Language in Hokkaido, Japan, with the Japanese Exchange and Teaching program. My time volunteering for the Stirling School of English really gave me a boost into this job, and I am loving it! Hardly anyone in my little Japanese fishing village speaks English, and I hardly speak any Japanese, so we all have to do a lot of guessing and charades and have a good sense of humour. It's a real learning experience."
