  • THE TREND, Dexters, Friday 17th Ocotber 2008

THE TREND, Dexters, Friday 17th Ocotber 2008

THE TREND are SHAUN KENNY (19, vocals), BILLY MITCHELL (18, vocals, guitar), JOSS WALKER (18, guitar), DARREN LOFTUS (20, bass) and KRIS BOYLE (20, drums).

Almost one year on from their very first gig at the Doghouse, it has been an interesting and exciting year for Dundee band The Trend.
Not long out of high-school, (Billy attended Lawside and the rest of the boys were pupils at St. John’s High), the band (except Kris) met up at a party during the summer of 2007 and started “jamming”. Billy had originally written the song “Let’s Go” and Joss recorded it onto his MP3 player.

Front-man Shaun said; “For a while, we were just having jams and everyone was getting into it. Then we wanted to go further cuz we were enjoying it so much. So we started putting ourselves out and getting gigs. We'd only got four songs but we weren't seeing just our mates at gigs; we were slowly starting to see new faces. At every new gig, we'd see more and began to get a following pretty quickly.”

Kris soon joined up on drums and THE TREND were born.

John Lennon once said; "You don't need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are. You are what you are." In a way, that’s the same idea behind the naming of the band.

“We were trying to think of a name. I came up with The Trend. Everyone's always telling you what to wear or like but we set our own trend” says Shaun.

From playing the world-famous Cavern Club in Liverpool at the end of January to upsetting grannies at the Caird Hall during the Pipers’ Trail Concert in July, The Trend have been turning heads and making people talk wherever they’ve played. They’ve played with and supported the likes of LITTLE MAN TATE, UNDERGROUND HEROES, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS and THE LAW. Also, they have a support-slot lined up in Sheffield on Monday 10th November supporting Dundee Indie-favourites THE VIEW.

Their very first gig at The Doghouse on 8th November 2007, (which was also The Naturals’ last gig, whose former front-man Callum McCardle, “CAZY” to close friends, sadly passed away in February at the young age of just 17), where they also supported THE FRETS and CAPTAIN PHOENIX. It was an exciting occasion albeit a nerve-racking one. Guitarist Billy Mitchell said; “I was so nervous, that I was spewing up before we went on stage!”

Highlights for the band include playing gigs in Glasgow, Manchester and the Cavern Club gig in Liverpool. The Cavern, “The most famous Club in the World”, is famous for first introducing the music world to The Beatles in 1961 and the boys made a good impression, with a local radio station expressing an interest in their music. They were also hired to play an 18th birthday party where there was not so many young “teeny boppers”. “It was full of OAPS and auld grannies, half of them walked oot, haha, it was an easy £150”, laughed Billy.

The band said their most memorable gig-to-date was during the Pipers Trail Concert held at the Caird Hall on 5th July. This was supposed to be a rather more mellow display of theatre and music, and then you get The Trend, with stage invasions and kids jumping up and down doing star-jumps behind Kris’ drum-kit during the performance. The band announces; “We’re the fuckin’ TREND!” This performance sparked a none too impressed reaction from some of the watchers in the hall, including a woman in the crowd who was there with her two young grand-daughters and felt she had to leave. She complained to officials and wrote in to local paper The Evening Telegraph; “We were having a great time until The Trend came on stage. Their music contained nothing but swear words and obscenities…” Rock and Roll!

At the start of the DEXTERS gig, guitarist Joss Walker went AWOL and the rest of the band had to start without him, they were shouting on him from their microphones and front-man Shaun was even on his mobile-phone, in between breaks
