- Save Ballykillaire
The North Down council propose to sell the recreational land surrounding Ballykillaire playing fields. This is the last open space in the Bangor West area.
In 1994 the council agreed that this should be a conservation area and provide open space for the local community. Now they propose to sell it to developers. Local residents will lose this recreational area and wildlife such as foxes, ducks, sparrowhawks and moorhens will lose their homes.
We call for help and support of the local community in Bangor West and support of the people of North Down to speak up against this environmental vandalism. Any comments / views will be submitted to the council to pressure them to reverse their decision.
If you wish to help SOOS msg our bebo.
Say no to this loss of open space.

Brian's Press Statement
Brian Wilson MLA condemns the secret decision to sell of land at Bangor Sportsplex for housing.
Green Party Alderman Brian Wilson condemns the decision by North Down Council reached at a meeting after the press and public had been excluded to sell off land at the playing fields.
I am totally opposed to this decision by the council to sell off this land for development because:
1. It is one of the few green areas left in Bangor West
2. The area is already overdeveloped with growing infrastructure problems
3. Residents will lose this important amenity space
4. It is contrary to PPS8 which prevents council selling off open space and playing fields for development
5. It breaks an agreement which the council made with local residents and wildlife groups that the bogland area should be retained as a conservation area for the benefit of the many birds and animals which inhabit it
6. I am particularly concerned that the decision was taken in secret with no public discussion and the residents were not aware of the councils intention until they read the final decision in the local paper
I would appeal again to the council to reconsider this decision which will destroy an important amenity and conservation area enjoyed by the residents of this densely populated area.

To be fair, in this specific case it's hardly the most attractive piece of open ground nor is it the clearest conservation case - but the principle that we need to maintain open space, not just in the Green Belt but also within residential and commercial areas, is one well worth establishing. -

It is riduculous that they have decided to sell this land for housing, surely there are enough houses in the area already. I have grown up with these fields and was informed as a child that they would never be sold. I would like the future generation to be able to see and play in open space. It seems as if the council are encouraging children to stay in and play computer games as they keep taking away their play areas!
