Alt Music Manifesto.... first draft
Singer songwriter night
Currently there are two formats to the singer songwriter night, firstly the informal sit down gatherings which are very good for newcomers and people that might not have the confidence for the stage, secondly placing the performers on stage, preferably someone should be there to MC the night introduce the acts and arrange the playing order,
There is a set-up charge for chairs of €30. (If the group do their own set-up, there is no charge.)
Clubs and societies must use one of our qualified sound engineers where necessary, which must be paid for by the group.
The lighting rig must only be used by people who have been trained to use it. If groups do not have their own trained lighting engineer, the Students’ Union has a list of qualified people. Where necessary, these must be paid for by the group.
If the bar is required in the Venue, a deposit of €50 must be paid in advance. (If more than 50 people attend your event, your deposit will be returned.)
The Venue (including Stage and Green Room) must be returned to condition in which it was found after the event.
Failure to do so will incur penalties.
To book the venue email: nuiments@gmail.com
The mood in the venue is easily enhanced by dimming the lights and placing candles around in various locations, having the bar open usually detracts from the performance as people can be heard ordering pints.
If a lecture theatre needs to be book email or ring ???????????
Persistence is the key to making sure the room is booked, double check with the office just to make sure, we should keep using the same room when possible every time so as not to confuse people and keep them coming back, this might mean taking a less popular room that people don’t usually book before us.
Placing candles around lecture theatres is considered a fire hazard and is not tolerated by security personnel so fairy lights will have to be used instead, bottles of wine can be purchased prior to each event with each person paying one or two euro to cover costs and then they can drink as much as they want, these lecture theatre nights should be just sit around informal nights as they don’t suit a stage type setup.
Dj sets
Various different students can compile playlists using a dj software program i.e., window media player or itunes they will bring there laptops to the venue to be plugged in via the headphones socket into the desk they are responsible for their own laptops safety throughout the night and are expected to lend a helping hand in the smooth running of the night i.e. the setting up and taking down of gear and any crowd trouble that might annoy the students union and force them to reconsider future events. A projector if needed must be ordered a few days in advance from:

Bands
As alt music society it is our duty to promote small unsigned acts and give them a platform to promote themselves, I suggest all day gigs in the venue with different bands on throughout the day, opening the bar, and having music ready for in between the bands, these will need to be advertised well in advance, possibly get a few different societies to set up stalls inside so as to draw people in, having drink promotions and even not telling the individual bands what time there on at until really close to the day so their fans don’t know what time to arrive and therefore stay all day hopefully, last year there was nobody at these gigs at all and it was a complete waste of time for the bands,
I think that there is a policy of only having bands from the college or that have some member attending the college and I suppose it’s fair enough, and the majority of the bands on any given day will be, but I feel in order to keep a decent standard of music a few external bands might have to be brought in, ones that we know for sure are entertainers. So if ya know people who might want to play ge0 Comments 825 days
