THREE TEENAGERS ARE KILLED IN CRASH NEAR WEST POINT

Three teenagers died Tuesday(10-10-06) when the 1996 Chevrolet Corsica they were riding in collided with a grain truck near West Point, Neb.

Pronounced dead at the scene of the 4 p.m. accident were James E. Sell, 18, and Derek A. Hultquist, 17, both of West Point, Neb, and William(Billy) P. Peterson, 15, of Oakland, Neb. None of the teens was wearing a seat belt.

Investigators from the Cumings County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol determined that James Sell was driving the Corsica west bound on County Road 1 about 6 miles east of West Point when the car went through a stop sign, colliding with a grain truck that was northbound on County Road 24.

The truck driver, Ronald Throener, 61, of West Point, was not injured.

Mike Apple, principal of Oakland-Craig High School, said "Peterson was a sophomore there and Sell was in the process of reenrolling for the spring semester."

"I knew both of those boys very well," Apple said. "Billy Peterson was just a very nice young man who had all kinds of potential. He was a really good kid."

"James was someone that, I think, was searching for what he wanted to do but who was on the right track with his decision to return to school."

Doug Smith, principal at Lyons-Decatur Northeast High School, said Hutquist had left that school.

"Derek Hultquist left school in January of 2006 for a variety of reasons, and he didn't come back," Smith said. "I have only been here a year and didn't get too much of a chance to know him."

"Smith will be alerting the school counselor to help the kids get through this."
