Ich über mich
Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit independent registered charity, which receives no financial support from the government or any other charity body. We rely entirely upon the kindness and generosity of the people of Northern Ireland. The sanctuary is run by a small staff, aided by a dedicated team of volunteers, who are happy to pursue their love of animals in a positive and rewarding way.

Since we opened in April 1996, we have found caring homes for over 8000 unwanted, stray or abandoned animals. But as we have a strict NO KILL POLICY, our kennels are always full with as many as 60 dogs and 70 cats, aswell as litters of puppies and kittens. They are all secure in the sanctuary until suitable homes are found.

  • Discover the Mid Antrim Animal Sanctuary.....

Hi, we got a wee brown puppy from you almost 10 years ago; she was born in the Sanctuary to a Springer. It’s her 10th birthday soon. She’s beautiful, so loving and so much fun! She really is the light of our lives. You can see her on the Discover Northern Ireland tourist board advert, the one with the couple in it, in Newcastle. She’s running on her favourite beach, smiling. The advert was shown in England too, in breaks in Coronation Street! So she’s been seen by about 16 million people! With her appearance fee I bought her and her brother Dexter (3 year old rescue Border Collie, handsome & hyper) 2 new waterproof swanky beds. The rest of her appearance fee I will send to you! Thank you for our wee angel!

We didn’t know what we were going to call her when we got her, as she’s chocolate coloured ‘Cadbury’ and some terrible suggestions were considered before I decided on ‘Trassey’ after a track in the Mournes we’d recently been walking on. We were there the other day and got some odd looks when we were calling her on her namesake track! For Christmas her Mummy knitted her 4 red legwarmers with a ‘T’ on them and made her a wee Christmas bandana, which she loved ripping open. After 6 years in Glengormley she loves being a rural dog now and is still bouncy, slim and beautiful and looking forward to her paw casting kit on her birthday.

  • And the real winners are..... the Sanctuary residents!

The Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary would like to extend a whole-hearted “thank you” to everyone who so generously sponsored Clare Kelly and Shane Steele to compete in the Belfast Marathon on the 4th of May. We hope you will be as pleased and proud as we are of how well they both did by completing the full 26 miles on a cold, grey, drizzly day.

Clare Kelly - a regular volunteer and dedicated dog walker - is eighteen years old, and a pupil at Antrim Grammar. Clare’s dog walking became an essential part of her training; honing her stamina in order to walk the full 26 miles in just under 7 hours - WELL DONE, CLARE!

Shane Steele, our Sanctuary kennel assistant, had also been in training for the past few months. Shane not only ran the full 26 miles but did it in just over three and a half hours! Together they rose over £1500.00, with sponsorship still coming in. We are all delighted with this result and with Clare and Shane requesting the funds be spent on outdoor facilities for the residents; we are all eagerly anticipating a tangible record of their enormous achievement.

Also pictured, are three of the five wonderful young ladies who took part in the Marathon as a relay team - raising much needed funds for the Sanctuary. They all work in the Clear Pharmacy in Antrim, coming up with the idea through their mutual love of animals. Their time, energy and love certainly paid off as they donated over £500.00 to the upkeep of the shelter; again, with money still coming in! Their generosity is appreciated so much by everyone, but none more so than the residents in our care, who rely and benefit from such positive acts of kindness.

When asked if he would consider doing the marathon again next year, Shane replied; “Definitely! I hope to do better next year, going faster and raising more money and awareness. I’ve been speaking to quite a few others since Monday [4th of May] who are really interested in competing next year. It would be brilliant to have a bigger team, not just to raise more funds, but it would be really beneficial for training, pushing and encouraging each other on.”

If you would be interested in taking part in next year’s marathon, please contact Shane Steele at the Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary on: 028 94463993.
