q-topia is a social support network for *queer youth (or youth who are questioning their sexual identity) in the Canterbury region aged 14-25. We run regular social events and aim to have a lot of fun. We meet weekly, some of our events include going to cafés, movies, picnics, ten pin bowling, go-kart racing, watching DVDs or simply hanging out.
q-topia provides a social support group for queer youth that affirms and appreciates the diverse qualities of participants. By providing a safe and interesting space for queer youth to meet others, q-topia aims to provide an environment where those who attend the group can safely explore issues and be supported in having pride in who they are.
q-topia is a 'queer' play on the word Utopia. Utopia is an imaginary place where everything is perfect. Well, that's what we're aiming for!

Christchurch Prideweek 2009
Akira, Joe and I are on the committee for Pride Week 2009 and were making sure this years events include youth as much as possible and indeed Qtopia will have a hand in hosting an event or too.

Wednesday 25th February - Wear a Pink Shirt Day!
We have a serious problem with bullying in NZ schools. In December last year a major international report ranked New Zealand second worst among 37 countries when it comes to bullying in primary schools.
SS4Q and teacher unions NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua are joining forces to make our schools safe for ALL students, by promoting February 25 as Pink Shirt Day.
The first Pink Shirt Day took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, when two 17 year old high school students decided to stand up for a friend who had been harassed for wearing a pink shirt to school. The boys, David Shepherd and Travis Price, decided that the bullying had to stop. They went to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops, sent out the message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning handed them to students to wear. When the bullied boy walked in, according to Travis Price, “It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders. The bullies were never heard from again.”
More must be done to stop physical and emotional violence and make our schools safe for all of our young people to learn in. One way we can do this is for the community to stand up and show that bullying is not OK. Schools cannot solve these problems alone.
You can help make Pink Shirt day a success. Wear something PINK on Wednesday 25th February.
SS4Q is a national network working towards making schools safer for queer young people. It consists of representatives from a range of organisations, and a number of individuals from the GLBTI communities, academics and other interested people.

Yeah Gidday and Cheers!
Hey all,
well were into our 6th week back for 2008 and I'd just like to take this chance to say a big 'Hi There!' and 'Welcome' to all our new members of late. Its been great to have some fresh faces (and some from the past) come along.
We've had a large influx of members and contacts so far this year both locally and nationally. We also have some new facilitators this year who are helping us balance out the gender ratio. As well as new members and facilitators we have some new board members be appointed whom are sure to make this year 'truelly, truelly, truelly Outrageous!
If you are keen to become a facilitator or know more about the group, or if you would like to help out or have any suggestions for future events then please don't hesitate in contacting us.
Also keep an eye out for our new posters soon to be displayed around schools and town. We are all looking forward to another FABULOUS year!
