- This group pays tribute to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The OSCE was founded during the Cold War to boulster east-West ties and to proactively prevent any instability in Europe which could unintentionally ignite a wider conflict.
The OSCE is sponsored by the UN and itself sponsors several peace initiatives including the Convention on armed forces in Europe, the office for minority rights and over a dozen field missions in states making the transition from communism to democracy.
The OSCE is headquartered in Vienna but the bulk of its employees are stationed in field missions.
No it's not like NATO. It is essentially the UN in europe. It performs most of the bureaucratic tasks that the UN takes on in other parts of the world. The UN does not consider Europe to be troubled enough to merit massive bureaucratic support, it concentrates its efforts elsewhere, so the European states fund the OSCE to do this task for them localy. The OSCE also includes Russia, which makes it more inclusive than the NATO security community.
