About Me

Me, Myself, and I
Avon United is one of the largest soccer clubs in the South Island. We were formed when Riccarton was merged with Shamrock at the end of 1995. We are based in the western part of Christchurch and draw most of our players from Avonhead, Riccarton, Burnside, Fendalton, Ilam, Bryndwr and Hornby. Our club rooms are at Riccarton Domain on Yaldhurst Road.

  • Becks Night Ever

Thought you boys might like to read this story of mine from the Beckham weekend. It has actually got round the working email network a bit but dont have any of your emails, some people have even sent it into the radio stations. I have had random girls coming up to me at parties asking to touch my hand.

    BECKS NIGHT EVER

    So where to begin…..
A group of us went to the Beckham game last weekend. LA Galaxy vs Wellington Pheonix. A great crowd of 31 853, great atmosphere and a NZ record attendance for any football match in the country. LA came out on top, 4-1, but the score did not really matter (although it did the night before when the Phoenix lost to Adelaide damn it). Of course the crowd was there to see one man, David Beckham and he didn’t disappoint. He had a hand (or would that be foot) in a couple of the Galaxy goals and got on the score sheet himself (even if it was only a penalty). Most guys in the crowd were in awe of Beckham’s inch perfect passing and hoping for a Galaxy freekick just outside the Phoenix box. While the females and maybe some of the guys were in awe of some of Beckham’s other inches and hoping he would get near their box. This was well demonstrated by the extremely feisty plump female streaker who, I must say, gave the 4 security guards on top of her a real run for their money before finally being dragged down the tunnel.

After the game we walked into town and had a drink at the ‘Good Luck’ bar (how appropriate that bar name seems now). Our party eventually dwindled to two as Jolly, April, Rene, Briar, Elliot, Cappy and Sarah left (or were dragged home - WIPPISH). A few drinks had turned into a lot, especially for myself. Nenad liked my raising of the tempo and got onto a few vodkas himself. With my ability to see and walk straight severally hampered Nenad and I left the bar and I located a strategic vomiting spot down an alleyway. Feeling much better, Nenad mentioned the Beckham after party might be at the Terry Serepisos-owned World Trade Centre. We were very close to the place so went for a look. Sure enough out the front was a red carpet, large black SUVs and a couple of bouncers. We tried walking in but were asked if we had an invite. Not wanting to get a hiding we said no and got told to move on. I asked if Landon Donovan was still in there. “No, he left” said the bouncer. “What about Beckham?” I ask, “not sure” he says. Smiling we walked off, knowing very well that Beckham was in there.

Nenad, the legend he is, suggests that he thinks there is another entrance round the side of the building. We walked round the other side and found a carpark building, so walked up some ramps for 3-4 floors before in the distance we hear thumping bass and see people at the back of the building with a big black Audi parked just outside the door, the relevance of this car is explained later. We soon realize that it is a service entrance to the adjoining building as waiters and ushers were racing in and out getting supplies. Spotting a smokers table for guests we get out our cell phones and pretend to be talking on them as we strut on over. We sit down next to a couple of scantly clad girls who are talking about how they want to ‘do’ Beckham. We thought maybe we could grab them by the arms when they finish fagging and walk in with them, but the fact that they basically ignored our conversation efforts soon put that idea to rest. Instead Nads, just stood up and walked through the door with me following him. Not a bouncer to be seen. We were both expecting a heavy arm to grab us by the collar at any moment but it never happened.
Once inside we realized we were in the right place by the fact that we were standing amongst some Phoenix players such Vaughn Coveny, Jeremy Christie, Felipe, Shane Smeltz etc. Not quite believing our success we tried to contain our excitement by hitting the bar and grabbing a few free beers (Becks of course). We soon noticed that everyone else had
