You don't really understand the true effects, the horror, of the life changing illness, Anorexia, until you have experienced it firsthand.

Amongst us in society 3-4% of people have anorexia or bulimia. That means 160,000 people in NZ may be affected by Anorexia. Around 10% of adolescent girls suffer some form of an Eating Disorder (ED) and most of these will never get the adequate support and help they need to overcome the obsessive and destructive nature of their illness.

It seems to me in this day and age that, as well as the glorious media telling us what we should look like, amongst ourselves we have a sickening awareness of appearance to the extent we are convincing ourselves that we shall be forever in the pursuit of perfection. And from this, it seems that sadly, four, or so, percent of New Zealanders will begin down a path of self destruction.

Don't get me wrong in thinking that I don't believe that obesity is a growing issue, but it seems that a lot of Health Advisories in New Zealand are simply not seeing the seriousness behind the growing number of people affected by anorexia, and are instead focused on combating the issue of over-weight people, and the fact we are the third largest country in the world.

25% of New Zealanders suffer from Obesity, and to make this clear, Obesity is more often than not caused by bad nutrition and lack of exercise (which can be helped by eating more healthily and exercising more) unlike EDs which are caused by far more serious and harder to cure mental issues. The knowledge behind our Obesity ranking is worldwide, and it seems that it is drawing the attention of Health Professionals in NZ away from the far more serious illness.

To try and explain to people what anorexia does to the person it possesses, to their family, to their friends, their social lives and their future is like trying to explain the meaning of life. For every individual affected there is a different cause and I doubt that many would be able to tell anyone why, or how, their anorexia set in.

To see someone fall under its grasp isn't easy, and for me I can only share what I know from seeing my sister’s life change because of it. Most people see it as anorexics not wanting to eat, wanting to lose weight, and in many ways it is, but there is much more behind it all than just food. Food seems to be a way of controlling lost thoughts and feelings that they experience. I kind of think of it as a way of purging what's inside of you, in an attempt to rid yourself of whatever is inside.

Weight loss is the most obvious to-the-eye effect of the anorexia, but it comes with many others, continuous starvation can cause weakened bones (Osteoporosis), loss of brain tissue and muscle, including the heart muscle, lowered oestrogen (in women), loss of normal menstrual cycles, constipation, low blood pressure, dizziness, constant coldness, depression and decreased energy. They often lose the ability to concentrate urine resulting in more frequent urination and there can be a great disturbance in electrolytes (salt and minerals in the blood) causing abnormal heart rhythms and in the long term can cause serious heart conditions. Hair can fall out, skin will perish and the person’s body slowly begins to shut down... and die.

Unfortunately, I have had to see some of the hardest side effects of Anorexia, and it will affect my sister for the rest of her life. It is so hard to watch someone being tortured by whatever the demon is inside of them, and not know what to do. I wrote this blog, so that anyone who doesn't know the seriousness of this condition may have their eyes opened and see that this is something that cannot be pushed to the bottom of the agenda of the Health Boards "to address" list. The time is now to start putting NZ resources into building preventive programs, and rehabilitation centres for the 160000 New Zealanders who don't have an answer to their suffering.

This is as important as any Obesity
