Turkey is a large, prosperous, democratic state with a european heritage. The modern state was founded on enlightenment principles after the first world war, and Turkey has remained a liberal society ever since. Turkey is already a candidate country.

Turkey's accession would fit the classic role of the EU in resolving ethnic rivalries. Joining the EU would help soothe tensions with both Greece and Cyprus. This is the primary role of the EU.

Turkey also has close diplomatic links with countries in the middle east and central asia, where the EU has been trying unsuccessfully to develop links. It also has influence in the balkans which is useful to maintain peace on our continent.

Turkey has a big economy and a large army which will contribute to the EU' influence internationally. Turkey also contains Europe's largest city: Istanbul.

      Türkiye ile Avrupa Birliği'nin ilişkileri 31 Temmuz 1959'da Türkiye'nin Avrupa Ekonomik Topluluğu'na yaptığı ortaklık başvurusu ile başlar. AET Bakanlar Konseyi'nin başvuruyu kabul etmesi sonrasında 12 Eylül 1963 tarihinde Ankara Anlaşması imzalanmıştır. Ankara Anlaşması ortaklık yaratan bir anlaşmadır.

      Bunu 1970 yılında imzalanan Katma Protokol izlemektedir. Türkiye'nin, sonradan Topluluk üyesi olan birçok ülkeden daha önce Topluluk ile ilişkilerini başlatmış olan bu iki önemli belge, o tarihlerden sonra ve 17 Aralık 2004 tarihli Avrupa Konseyi Sonuç Bildirgesi sonrasında halen devam etmekte olan süreçte Türkiye-AB ilişkilerinin hukuki dayanaklarındandır.

      Come on people have you all gone mad?! OH MY FUCKIN GOD! WHY THE FUK WOULD TURKEY BECOME PART OF THE E.U? THE SIMPLE FACT IS THAT TURKEY IS NOT IN EUROPE..... ITS A EURASIAN COUNTRY & MOST PEOPLE CONSIDER EUROASIA TO BE A CONTINENT OF ITS OWN... Europeans of the last few centurys did great work first haulting the Turks outside Vienna,then driving them out completely!
