Our troubles with the minimum wage issue, which has forced one of our tuna canneries to close and another to scale back operations, started in January, 2007, after the U.S. House passed a minimum wage raise and Speaker Pelosi said she instructed the Labor Committee to make sure it also applied to American Samoa as well as other territories before final passage. I also don’t know why he makes a point of saying Congressman Obey gave him assurances the problem would be fixed when the final bill that was enacted was passed exactly as the Speaker directed.
