• Potter Princess Gets Animated

  BEVERLY HILLS -- Emma Watson has taken time off from the world of Harry Potter to venture into the land of Dor -- and she's had a ball.
  
  More specifically she was supplying the voice for a forlorn princess named Pea in the upcoming animated film version of the award-winning novel, The Tale Of Despereaux, about a gallant mouse (Matthew Broderick) who rescues her from a kidnapping.
  
  
  "The land of Dor feels quite magical, so I guess it has that in common with Harry Potter," comments the 18-year-old British youngster, revered by millions of kids around the world for her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Potter films. But she adds that she was dealing with very different stories and very different messages. "And it was such fun for me to work in a completely different medium, doing an animated feature. It was a lot of fun and I'm massively proud of it"
  
  
  The film's co-director, Sam Fell, thinks that Watson has superstar written all over her. And here she is this morning, radiant in a snazzy off-one-shoulder outfit, poised and ready to deal with a variety of questions.
  
  
  She found the whole animation process fascinating, as she visited a recording studio in London on several occasions over a two-year period to record the princess's scenes.
  
  
  "Tale of Despereaux was made over quite a long period of time, so I was kind of brought in for a couple of days here and there, and then they'd progress a bit further, or something would change and then I'd come in and do another three or four days. So it was quite spread out -- a long process."
  
  
  She quickly realized the challenge of having to use her voice alone to help mould a character and did a lot of thinking about bringing life to her assignment.
  
  
  "She's basically your generic princess. She's very beautiful and she lives in the land of Dor and everything's great. But then she loses her mother and her father goes into this state of grieving. He just locks himself away from his people and his responsibilities and also from his role as a father.
  
  
  "So she's pretty lonely, she's pretty isolated, she's kind of literally locked up in this tower and can't be part of the real world. So I thought this was interesting and felt very sad for her. I thought the conversations she had with Despereaux were really charming, and I really fell in love with the script and the book."
  
  
  She had to keep reminding herself that she wasn't portraying Hermione.
  
  
  "I guess I've had paranoid moments where I will hear something in my own voice, and go, ‘Gosh, do I sound like Hermione there?' I definitely had an awareness of it because I've played her for so long and she is so distinctive and she is so much a part of me. But Pea was more gentle. I instantly felt like a different person or character playing her. I was worried about it, but it worked out OK."
  
  
  She had to deal with a lot of emotions within the solitude of a recording studio.
  
  
  "A lot of my performance is quite physical in the film because I've been kidnapped and there's a rat in my room and whatever. It was hard getting all of that into my voice -- the emotional and the out-of-breath and the screaming. But it was fun. I was actually given a toy Despereaux who I could speak to, so I had a kind of substitute."
  
  
  But she wasn't working alone all the time, although this is normally the practice for actors supplying voices for an animated movie.
  
  
  "Actually, Matthew very kindly came in and did a couple of days with me," Emma reports.
  
  
  "And I got to go to London for free!" Broderick pipes up.
  
  
  Emma had to audition for the role, but she didn't mind after reading the script.
  
  
  I was so desperate to play the role. I was so kind of excited and enthusiastic about it that they very kindly gave me the role because I expressed so much interest in it."
  
  
  Still, Harry Potter continues to consume her life. Shooting of the sixth film is done, and it is set for

  Hi peeps!!!! Just a wee blog entry to let you all know that i'm thinking of getting rid of the forum . it's been there for months now and we've had five "guests" leave us comments and only five people register.
  
  i've improved it though with a Bonnie category and updated the Emma category with a new board: Siblings where you can talk about Alex if that's what you want to do . also, the Boyfriend board is now only viewable by registered members.
