Driving the Vote!
Rock the Vote is going to be visiting 18 towns and cities over the next 5 days with all you need to make an informed decision in the Referendum on June 12th.
We’re gonna be visiting Sligo, Ballina, Castelbar, Galway, Ennis, Limerick, Tralee, Cork,
Midelton, Youghal, Dungarvan, Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Athlone Drogheda, Dundalk, and Cavan. Check out our itinerary below or on www.rockthevote.ie and come out and meet us. We’re gonna be linking up with bands along the way, and we have buckets of T-Shirts and Lollipops to give out.
We’re also gonna have plenty of information on the Lisbon Treaty if you want to find out more about what you’re gonna be voting on, and so that you can make an informed decision on June 12th.
This referendum looks like it could be really close – this means that your vote will make a big difference.

The Lisbon Treaty-Explained
What is the Lisbon Treaty?

The passing of the Lisbon Treaty would change the way the European Union is governed and operates. That means it will affect you directly. Therefore, it's important that you have a say in this referendum. If you don't find out about the Lisbon Treaty and vote, then others will make the decision for you.
Rock the Vote wants to explain in no uncertain terms:
* what you're deciding in the referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon;
* what the Lisbon Treaty is about.
Others will argue for a 'Yes' or a 'No' vote. Rock The Vote believes it's important you make that decision for yourself. We want simply to explain what the Lisbon Treaty referendum is about and get you out and voting.
What You're Deciding:
By voting on the Lisbon Treaty, you're deciding whether or not to change the Constitution of Ireland to:
* allow Ireland to ratify the Treaty of Lisbon;
* allow Ireland to agree to certain decisions in the area of the European Commission's Freedom, Security and Justice department if the Dáil and Seanad approve;
* allow Ireland to agree at the European Council to some changes in the EU treaties; though the changes to EU treaties may depend on the passing of a referendum (public vote) or require the approval of the Dáil and Seanad;
* continue Ireland's military neutrality.
What The Treaty of Lisbon is about:
The Treaty would change, but not replace, the two main treaties that govern the EU at the moment, namely:
* the Treaty Establishing the European Community (the EC Treaty)-- Formerly called ‘Treaty establishing the European Economic Community', currently also called ‘Treaty of Rome', signed 25 March, 1957 by France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg in order to, as the title suggests, establish The European Community.
* the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht Treaty)--Formerly called ‘Treaty on European Union', or ‘TEU' signed 7 February, 1992 by all the states that were then members of the European Community. This treaty created the European Union, including the euro, the three pillars of the EU, and other key elements of the EU as we know it today.
The Treaty would also change the name of the EC Treaty to the "Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union".
What happens if you vote YES?
If you, and the majority of voters vote ‘yes', then you will have changed the Constitution of Ireland and ratified the Treaty. If all the other Member States in the EU also ratify it, then The Lisbon Treaty will be put into effect in full, as soon as January 2009 (this is the date by which the Member States have said they intend to bring the Treaty into effect).
What Happens if you Vote NO?
If you, and the majority of voters vote ‘no,' then you will leave the constitution unchanged, and Ireland won't ratify the Treaty. The Treaty will not be ratified by the EU unless each and every member state ratifies it, so in the event of a ‘no' vote, the EU would continue to operate under its present rules.
How the Treaty would change how
the EU is governed:

Ordinary Legislative Procedure: the term used in the Treaty of Lisbon to describe the process where the Commission makes the proposals for policies and laws and the Council and the European Parliament make decisions on those proposals jointly. Basically, the term "Ordinary Legislative Procedure" replaces the term "co-decision".
Special Legislative Procedures: the term used in the Treaty to describe times when the ordinary legislative procedure is not used for decision-making. This mostly happens in the area of Common Foreign and Security Policy. With Common Foreign and Security Policy, the Council makes decisions and the European Parliament may also have to be consulted in some cases.
