Did you know 50% of the domestic waste in landfills during this time of the year is "Green Waste"!?0 Replys 60 weeks
This waste, when dumped at a refuse site, not only increases methane (a greenhouse gas) due to the anaerobic decay but contributes to an acidic environment within the tip and dissolves heavy metals. This solution of acids and metals (along with various other chemicals) that excretes from the rubbish "cell" is called "leechate" and pollutes waterways and estuaries. Please help reduce the amount of “waste" that clogs up our precious landfills by starting up your own compost bin.
NOTE: (This is far more effective and tidier than a heap of grass clippings in the back corner of your garden)
To make you can use wood, bricks, stack of old tyres an old bath tub, corrugated Iron or buy one from your local hardware store.
Ideally it will be vertically stackable/collapsible or have pitch fork access on one side.
Be sure to mix "brown waste" such as leaves, cardboard inc (damp - pizza boxes, toilet rolls & egg cartons) , straw, saw dust (non treated wood), vacuum dust and cold wood ash with the "Green waste".
This is compost food (carbon) and keeps the acid levels right for the micro organisms to grow and conditions not too harsh for the little worms.
* A good idea is to have two bins side by side, that way one can be maturing while the other is decomposing.
* It is very important to turn the brew every few months and hopefully by the time you fill bin1, bin2 the (maturing one) will be ready for your garden or pot plants. (you could even sell it as potting mix)
You can tell it’s ready because it will have an earthy smell and will be brown and grainy. This may take up to 5-6months but can be reduced to 3 if turned and managed well.
* If you don’t produce enough waste for a large compost bin, you could consider a worm farm.
* Start with a well drained base, poke or stir up the dirt before placing the bins and put some thick sticks or breathable free-draining matter as the base.
* If you compost starts to smell it may not be getting enough air. - To help aid this; make sure there are holes on the side and/or you insert spacers such as small tree branches or pvc plastic pipes (with holes) horizontally as your bin deepens to allow the mix to breathe.
* Make sure to also COVER your compost to keep valuable moisture and heat in, and vermin out! - On that note it is not recommended to put meat or dairy products in the mix for this reason as this attracts rodents and stray cats.
* Always keep your compost damp. Water is an essential ingredient in the composting process, but dont over do it! You dont want the mix to be gluggy or so cold that nothing happens.
Remember: Greens + Browns + Water + Air = Compost
PLEASE also NOTE: That; when running your Motorised lawn mower, you dont have to have it on MAX throttle, not only will you annoy the neighbours if you leave it too late in the afternoon, but you burn twice as much oil and fuel in the process.
A few tips: Turn the revs down when unloading the catcher and check your oil regularly .
AND let the engine warm up before getting in to the cutting you'll be surprised how much more power and fuel efficiency you get out of a warm mower.
Happy Gardening.

TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO SIGN THIS PETITION TO STOP THE GOVERMENT BANNING CRUISING. WE CANT LET THIS HAPPEN. EVEN IF YOU DON'T OWN A MODIFIED CAR THIS WILL STILL HAPPEN TO YOU
http://www.bebo.com/ForumThread.jsp?...
If this law goes through it will mean 3 things
1.- IT WILL BE ILLEGAL TO DO LAPS
If a cop catches you lapping twice in 3 months ( regardless of how slow you were driving)
YOUR CAR WILL GET IMPOUNDED
2. IT WILL BE ILLEGAL TO PARK UP
If you get caught parked up with friends by police twice in 3 months
YOUR CAR WILL GET IMPOUNDED
3. IT WILL BE ILLGAL TO CRUISE IN A GROUP
once again, the police will have the power to impound your vehicle if you get caught twice in 3 months
This is bullshit and breaches the bill of rights.FORWARD TO EVERYONE..... SPREAD THE WORD

Smokers, please dispose of your cigarette butts appropriately and ensure they are fully out before putting them in the bin.
Never throw a butt in to grass especially in the dry areas such as Canterbury.
