The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a registered charity, its purpose very clear - to save lifes at sea.

It provides the 24-hour on-call service to cover search and rescue requirements out to 100 nautical miles from the coast of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland and a seasonal lifeguard service on appropriate beaches in the south and south west of England. The RNLI is independent from Government and continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.

Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboats have saved more than 137,000 lives.

  • Lakeman launch for RNLI

Singer-songwriter Seth Lakeman will play a one-off gig to launch his new album on 25 June, will all profits coming to the RNLI.

The event, at The Watering Hole (http://www.the-wateringhole.co.uk/) on Perranporth beach, Cornwall, will launch Seth's new album Poor man's heaven. One of the album's tracks, Solomon Browne, tells the story of the 1981 Penlee lifeboat disaster.

Seth says: ‘I wanted to try to do something positive in launching the album, rather than just another gig, and raising money for the RNLI felt appropriate as the new album has such a strong coastal theme. Hopefully, it'll be a great gig and we'll raise some funds for this fantastic charity.'

Doors open at 8pm and tickets are £15 from http://www.bigwheeltickets.com.

  • Get your ticket for motor show

The British International Motor Show roars into London's ExCel exhibition centre from 23 July–3 August, and if you buy your tickets through this link the RNLI will get 10% commission on ticket sales.

The RNLI will exhibit at the motor show for the first time this year, as part of the Marine Experience. Boat lovers will be able to try out boats for free and see the Earthrace trimaran as well as Vipers and Thundercat racing.

For those who prefer to get their kicks on dry land, the show offers the chance to test drive your dream car, admire the world's greatest supercars (current and classic) and explore what's new in the world of motoring.

When the sun goes down the music starts. Big names including UB40, Status Quo and Blondie will play a part-covered outdoor arena on the water's edge. Concert ticketholders will also have access to the motor show on the day of their chosen gigs.

Prices vary depending on ticket type, and are available on the booking website. As an example, a weekday adult ticket costs £10, and the RNLI will get £1 for every ticket sold through this link: http://www.seetickets.com/motorshow/...

There are also family tickets, tickets for the preview day, and children's tickets. Children under 5 go free.

  • Challenge a lifeguard online

We all know that beach lifeguards must be physically fit to carry out their lifesaving duties, but they're not just pretty faces! RNLI lifeguards need to be fully focused mentally as well, keeping an eye out for potential hazards, knowing what to do in an emergency and making split-second decisions.

If you think you have the mental aptitude of a lifeguard, why not take the RNLI's Brain waves challenge? Brain waves is an online brain training game that has been launched as part of the charity's Life first campaign.

    http://www.rnli-lifefirst.org.uk/

You can register your high scores against those of other players, including real RNLI lifeguards and celebrities who support the campaign.

RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor John Powell says: ‘The game is a brilliant way to challenge your friends and family and is great fun, but the message behind this game and the Life first campaign itself is that, with more and more people visiting our beaches, it is becoming even more important that lifeguards are available to help keep people safe.'

Brain waves is available through the Life first campaign website, which also includes safety tips, video and lots of information on the RNLI Lifeguards service.

Give it a try, but beware – it can get addictive! :
