- I'm Shane, seventeen, an ex-CTYIer, and a student doing Computer Science in Trinity.
I love computers. I enjoy programming, in Ruby, Python and C in particular, but I know other languages too. The current vapourware that I'm working on is a musical programming language that I'm writing in C. Don't expect me to ever actually finish it though. I'm also a free software enthusiast and have been running Ubuntu exclusively since 2005.
My other big interest is music. I love creating music - I can play many instruments to some degree, but particularly guitar and bass. I like to experiment in the music I create but I fail to do that most of the time - hopefully it'll be easier when I get that musical programming language written. From the list of bands on the right you'll notice that I'm like black metal, doom metal, post-rock, ambient, neofolk, progressive metal and progressive rock. I call my own musical project Duairc, and I also play bass for Ocean Mirror, an experimental metal band.

Huh, so you are running Ubuntu too? Any chance you could tell me how to set keyboard short cuts for accented vowels (like á,é)? It's the only thing that's keeping me from making 8.04 my main OS!

Ah well it's been mostly an email conversation but I need to find out when someone can be at my house all day for the computer guy to come. Are you training to become one of those Dell guys?

So you're afraid you're going to become too into the computer nerd side of yourself? Well I don't see what's wrong with nerdiness being normal, I mean you went to CTYI after all. As long as you keep up the artistic stuff though. Are you still in your band and practising music? Or doing a music soc of some kind?
It is kind of like CTYI. Only there is a lot more homework.
So are you learning anything that you didn't already know in your computer apps class? Possibly how to fix a laptop motherboard? Because I just so happen to have a broken one of those and if a Dell guy doesn't come soon my warranty is going to run out.
I'm good except for being sick. Mono. I know, haha, it's the kissing disease. But it's not usually passed through kissing. I thought it was anaemia for months and nobody got infected during that time, including the boyfriend so I reckon you're all safe. School is going well. I'm really enjoying the institute

How come you didn't choose a more challenging course? I suppose it's not like doing something at CTYI, it's an actual degree for a job but if it weren't I'd try my hand at something new. I'm pretty sure I want to do law since I did the course at CTYI but I'm not sure whether at UCD or Trinity. Trinity would be easier to get to but UCD is where my parents went. College loyalty and all that!

Nah, it was good fun. The people in France were nice and Spain was lovely and warm so it was good. I also got to swim in pools, play lots of pingpong and watch insane amounts of House (we got through three seasons in two weeks!)
ah sure, at least you have the LC over and done with. We're still living in fear until we have to do the exam ourselves. You're more of an adult than the rest of us! Or at least, closer to a profession. What will you be doing with your computer science degree?
