About Me

Me, Myself, and I
I'm 27, blonde and short!
I'm unhealthily obsessed with musicals and am a cabaret artiste and theatrical producer. I perform and produce with Dublin-based drag/performance troupe DoppleGäng and have recently begun producing with theatre company Struts&Frets.
I have a "real job" too but I don't mind doin' it for the kids!
When I'm not working I enjoy cooking, good wine, entertaining, Dr. Who (classic and new) and reading science-fantasy novels.
The Other Half Of Me
Siobhan Killen

Siobhan Killen

The younger, brunette model!

Music
Musicals! Especially Wicked, Chicago, Cabaret, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Little Shop of Horrors, Hairspray, The Producers, Moulin Rouge and Easter Parade.. to name but a few. I also love jazz, swing and big band artists like Peggy Lee, Robbie Williams, Scott Walker, Eartha Kitt and Kristin Chenoweth. On a more modrin front I like The Dresden Dolls, Kaiser Chiefs, Roisin Murphy, Scissor Sisters, The Killers and Kylie Minogue.
Films
Again, musicals. But my all-time favourite film is Some Like It Hot. And Chasing Amy (not technically a musical:o) ).
Sports
Ick. No.
Scared Of
Spiders! Ewwwie! Escalators (especially the downy ones), heights and public transport.
Happiest When
Rehearsing difficult choreography, cooking for close friends, reading in the bathtub.
Nerdy Moment
"I have the loyhargil! Nothing can stop me now!" Kate O'Meara, Time and the Rani.
Nerdier Moment
Mark O'Halloran for the Eleventh Doctor!

Queer Encounters of the Third Kind

aLaf 2009, one of Ireland’s top queer arts festivals, are delighted to be collaborating with Dublin’s beloved performance troupe, DoppleGäng, this year. The Gäng, in association with aLaf, will play hostesses with the mostesses to internationally acclaimed touring drag and neo-burlesque company, the Windy City Blenders.

Those au fait with all things Drag will remember the Windy City Blenders from their two previous trips to Dublin, when they performed with Ireland’s first Drag King troupe, the Shamcocks, in 2004 and 2005.

Chicago’s finest bois and grrls are delighted to be making a return to Dublin to celebrate not only their third collaborative project with Ireland’s queerest and dearest but also their own five year anniversary.

No fewer than 19 performers from the far flung reaches of Dublin, Galway, Australia and Chicago will take to the stage for a one-night-only extravaganza of cheesey, sleazy, shiny, happy, dark and twisted mayhem at Dublin’s lushest performance venue, the Sugar Club, on 20th February.

Doors at 7.30pm; come one, come all! Door tax is a recession busting €10.00 and includes the option to stay on and have an oul bop to the sparkling retrotastic sounds of Strictly Handbag’s resident DJs.

With a special appearance by the godfather of Irish Kinging himself, Alternative Miss Ireland winner 2001, Sid Viscous, this promises to be a night to remember!

  • BENT gets FIVE STARS from METRO

    Effortless execution

    THEATRE REVIEW

    Bent *****

For whatever reason, there are likely to be plenty of people who presume that a play called “Bent” is not going to be for them - but this is by no means a work that belongs exclusively to any one community. The themes and issues central to Martin Sherman's powerful 1979 examination of the Nazis' persecution of homosexuals are devastatingly universal – and the standing ovation that this extremely strong production by Struts&Frets inspired showed just what an impact it had on all stripes of folks.
Bent tells the story of Max, a hard-partying gay man enjoying the decadence of pre-War Berlinand living in a small flat with his quick-tongued yet vulnerable boyfriend who is a dancer. Having been cast off by his wealthy family for shaming them with his open desire for other men, Max is hardened to society's disgust and his straitened circumstances. It soon becomes bloodily clear, though, that, with Hitler on the move, hiding his sexuality is no longer a matter of public taste but of sheer survival.
Ruairí O'Gorman gives a moving and utterly convincing performance as Max – he's charming, shallow and pragmatic to start, growing steely and determined as the absuse escalates and developing great strength and tenderness in the face of terrifying evils. O'Gorman performs with excellent empathy; his confident stage presence, expressiveness and everyman ease carry the audience with him as the action moves at a heart-stopping, stomach-churning pace to its dreadful conclusion.
The cast has no weak links – Eric Keogh is spot on as Rudy, the bitchy, sweet boyfriend; the Aryan Chris Heaney makes a truly wicked SS Officer; and Donncha O'Dea is dignified and loveable as Max's friend who teaches him the value of human life in Dachau.
Kristian Marken's direction is superb and has ensured the play is as hard-hitting, taut and tense as can be, while the use of sad, louche Berlin cabaret music alongside the cruel, grinding sounds of contemporary German techno is quite ingenious.
Hopefully, this will be a successful run for this important, political play that has a lot to teach in a world where we still censure people for as many spurious reasons as we can contrive – be it sexuality, ethnicity, class or gender.
