In August 2007 I was recovering from my 2nd knee surgery, I bumped my neck on the door of my car and got a bruise, a few weeks later I was back at work and had been going to the gym I was generally feeling the best I had in a long time, I noticed my bruise had turned into a lump I ignored it for a few weeks and after noticing it got bigger and didn’t go away I decided to go to the doctor, she gave me antibiotics and told me if it didn’t get better I had to go back, the following week I woke up to find I had two more lumps and the other had got bigger. I went straight back to the doctor where she asked for a second opinion by another G.P at her practice they discussed it and she later rang me to tell me I had an appointment with Kate Bayston at oncology the next Morning.

I walked into southland hospital and found oncology/ transfusion, I was unsure as to what oncology meant but went and sat there anyway, about 15mins later Kate called me into her room, I described the lumps and how they had grew, she measured them and then explained to me that I would need to undergo a series of tests starting with a blood test that she would like done immediately she also said that when I came back to see her I needed to bring my family and tell them what’s going on, at this point I was kind of like “what is going on?” , I left Kate’s room and as I walked past the waiting room I seen lots of cancer patients with no hair, alarm bells kind of rung for me but again I didn’t think too much of it.
I went and had my blood test and went back to work and told mum and dad about it, we googled oncology and that’s when we realized that it was too do with cancer and that my lumps could in fact be cancer, I was shocked and sort of in disbelief its one of those things that happens to everyone else, my knowledge on cancer was minimal so I googled my symptoms, the results were Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma or Hodgkin’s lymphoma, later that day Kate rang me to say she needed me to have a CT scan the following Friday, I had that and almost straight after the CT scan she requested I had a biopsy and more blood tests, after all of this I had an appointment with her, me mum and dad went along and waited half an hour after our appointed time, in the waiting room I had convinced myself it was nothing and the look on mum and dads face were concerning
We went in and sat down with Kate and her nurse, she started with…Emma, Hodgkin’s, my stomach churned, mum cried and dad just looked devastated, she went on to tell me that she will cure me and that I would need to have chemotherapy and possibly radiotherapy, she said I would need to have a portacath inserted into my chest and a bone marrow test done, I kind of stopped listening after that we all walked out and went to the car, we were silent.
We drove back to nana’s and mum and dad dropped me there while they went back to work to break the news to Phil and Roger, I cried so much with nana that day, dad came back and picked us up and we all went to their house, where mum had picked Stacie and Chloe up.
So the next week I had a bone marrow test and thought I had a couple more weeks to get my head around what had happened and prepare myself for chemo, they rung me when I was out looking at wigs and said they wanted to start my chemo the following week that I would need to get a picc line on the Monday and on the Thursday I would have my first treatment. So I had to agree they knew what was best.
They Put my P.I.C.C line in in radiology where a team of nurses and a anesthetist use a kind of glide wire to insert it up thru my vein in my arm so it goes into my heart, I had to keep it really clean and well covered, it got flushed and the dressing changed once a week.
My first chemo was scary I didn’t know what to expect so I was freaking out a bit, I ended up having a sleep through it and just felt really drained at the end, after one of the drugs I would go to the toilet and pee red, it was hor
