Real Names Vs. Creative names
So, I've read a bunch of the comments http://bebo.com/BlogView.jsp?MemberI..." about the "real name" vs. "the way it was before" fracas and have come to the following conclusions.
Changing to a real name is incredibly unpopular with people who spell poorly.
People think that having smilies and symbols in their name makes them creative, and is an important reason they are on Bebo.
Some people have threatened to leave Bebo over this feature and join MySpace .
Others feel that people will be able to more easily stalk them with the new feature added to the home page.
Regarding safety, the new feature will not make it easier for someone to stalk you. You don't have to use your real name here, just something that can be typed in on a keyboard. You can be Stinky Stankman for all we care, cleverly hiding from all the stalkers.
Furthermore, the go to my friends feature on the home page will not allow anyone to stalk you more readily. It's for going to your friends, not going to a random account. The only people who can use this feature are people whom you have added as a friend. Those people can also currently see your profile and have you in a friends list, so there's no decrease in safety.
These features are just the beginning of some interesting changes and additions to Bebo's features, and we believe the benefits are worth the costs for now. Imagine how much more useful mail will be with type-ahead auto complete for your friends.
