  • mad mike Okayama International Circuit

    Last weekend, Red Bull Mazda RX-7 driver Mad Mike Whiddett took on Japan’s best at the Okayama International Circuit for rounds three and four of the 2009 D1GP Series. Unfortunately it wasn't as successful as Mike would have hoped for, but the back-to-back rounds provided the local with some good experience to take to the next two D1GP rounds held in late August and mid October.

    Despite struggling in pre-practice with gearbox troubles, and then being plagued with further gearbox dramas, Mike, Chromey and the Team Magic crew were able fix the car in order to get the RX-7 to the grid. Unfortunately, Mike was unable to come to qualify for either day’s Top 16 battles, qualifying 27th for round three, and 25th for round four amongst the 44-strong field. While the results may not have been all Mike had wished for, reports from Japan are that, as we expected, Mike’s screaming quad-rotor RX-7 was the crowd favourite, with many members of the crowd “catching flies with their mouths wide open” as the naturally aspirated ‘7 screamed its way around the high-speed Okayama circuit.

  • Subaru to compete in Nurburgring endurance race

    Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has announced that it will compete in the world-famous Nurburgring 24-hour race next month. The gruelling race is now known as the ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race and STI is aiming for a class victory, with an Impreza WRX STI driven by Kazuo Shimizu, Toshihiro Yoshida, Naoki Hattori and Koji Matsuda.

    The car has been built and tuned exclusively by STI and will feature a variety of modifications including weight-reduction and safety equipment. It will participate in the SP3T class, for turbo-equipped cars with an engine displacement of 2.0 litres. STI will provide the team management for the race, supervised by Hideharu Tatsumi, STI's General Manager of Vehicle Experiment Division. The circuit covers 25.378 kilometres and the race is the largest endurance event in the world, with more than 200 cars participating.

    STI regularly uses the 20.832 km "Nordschleife" ("Old Course") as a proving ground for vehicles in development. STI's objective in participating in the race is to collect data and verify technical know-how, and also apply lessons learned to future development, particularly in relation to ride quality.

  • NZ Drift Series - Back on track for 09

    After near on six months away from the track, the NZ Drift Series is set to return in full force on May 16 at Manfeild for Round 1 of the 5-round 2009 NZ Drift Series, thanks to the crews at Cocaine Energy Drink and NAC Insurance. Bringing with it New Zealand’s top tier drifters, the Manawatu-based event will be an action-packed day of sideways action from the best New Zealand has to offer.

    The 2008 NZ Drift Series marked the first time ever in New Zealand drifting history that a driver defended a drift crown. In 2009, the question remains: can two times defending champion Carl Ruiterman take three from three and go on record as being the first Kiwi to secure three back-to-back championships? Or will the ever-consistent driver be pipped by some of the up and coming stars of the New Zealand Drifting scene?

    All will be revealed when the NZ Drift Series returns to tracks on Saturday May 16 at Manfeild. Gates open at 9.30am, with entry to the event costing $20.
