Matthew Leone was shouting. He didn’t usually do that. He was pacing the room angrily. He didn’t usually do that. He ran a hand through his striped hair and took a swig from a bottle. Okay, that, he did all the time.

But shouting and pacing? No. Not Matthew.

Nathan really must have blown it this time.

“He’s a bloody nightmare.” professed Matthew. “He’s deranged. Insane. My brother is insane.”

“Matthew, calm down.” I tried telling him.

“Calm down? Calm down!?” he said, eyes bulging. “How can I calm down? He practically murdered his wife and child! How can I calm down?”

“Matthew. It’s over. Luna and Eric are gone. It’s Adalia and Pandora we should be worrying about now.” I told him, pressing the bottle to him again. Hopefully he would get calmer as he got drunker.

“Eric. Eric. My nephew. I never got to see him grow up…” whispered Matthew. “Nathan is a bloody idiot. And so’s Luna. I knew I would have made a better father. I told her, the last day of high school, I told her. I said, ‘Luna I love you’. And she says ‘Sorry Matt’- she called me Matt!- she says ‘Sorry Matt, I been fucking your brother for a while now. I’d be awkward if I left him for you.’ That’s what she said! And then Nathan killed her. And her child. Little Eric. Poor Eric…”

“Matthew?”

“Yes?”

“Shut up.”

He sat down heavily on the dilapidated old couch and looked at me.

“You’ve been away for two weeks, Matthew. There’s a lot you’ve missed out on or don’t understand.” I said.

“Tell me.”

“Okay, so here are the facts. Nathan meets Luna and they have Eric. Luna insists they marry. Two years later, Nathan brings home ‘a drug’, which we’re not quite sure what it is, and Eric accidentally ingests some. Luna finds Eric dead and commits suicide. Nathan comes home. ‘Oh crap’ sequence. That was a week ago. Am I being understood?”

Matthew nodded.

“And somehow, the cops don’t seem to get wind of any of this. In the meantime Nathan-the-quick-recoverer starts seeing Pandora, who just so happens to be the Sheriff’s daughter.”

“Wait,” interrupted Matthew. “Pandora’s the Sheriff’s daughter?”

“Yep.”

“We have a Sheriff in Madina Lake? I didn’t think this place was big enough to warrant one.” he looked impressed. “Well, go on.”

“The only thing left is Adalia. Just before you got home, the cops had come to see me. She’s disappeared. Gone. Nobody’s seen her in the two weeks since you left. Nothing. All her stuff is still here, her credit cards haven’t been used, she’s just missing. I just thought she‘d gone with you and Mateo and Dan on that road trip.” I sat down next to Matthew. “What are we gunna do?”

“Well I guess we can’t bring Luna and Eric back from the dead, so we can leave that where it is. The Pandora thing seems to be going okay for Nathan at the moment, so I guess we fix our energy on finding Adalia.” he looked at me. “This isn’t going to be easy.”

“We have to try.”

“We’re not cops.”

“So instead we just sit here?”

“I’m gunna call Nathan. He has to get over here. I need to talk to him. And you can ask him about Adalia.” I nodded. “Adalia and him were best friends, once. If anyone knows where she is it has to be him.”

Matthew left the room and went to his bedroom to get his cell phone
