Win against Wasps :D
Glasgow’s preparations for next weekend’s Magners League opener at home against Munster (on Friday 4 September, kick-off 8pm) were given a timely boost with a well earned win over London Wasps in front of a lively crowd of 2,252 Warriors fans.
The home side lead for all but the last eight minutes of the match when Wasps wing Tom Varndell crossed for his second to sneak the lead but replacement stand-off Dan Parks captured the lead, and the victory, from a penalty in front of the post two minutes from time.
After the game, Warriors head coach Sean Lineen said: “We saw some really good performances from the players that started tonight.
Summer signing Chris Cusiter recieved a warm welcome as he made his first appearance at Firhill.
“We’ve worked hard on our contact and worked hard on our defence. We know clearly why Wasps scored those two tries and those things can be fixed.
“Our defence for long periods of the game was outstanding. I thought the scrum performed well and young Jon Welsh was brilliant. That’s what we want, real competition.
“I thought Peter Murchie did well. He was only meant to play for 60 minutes but he wanted to stay on for the whole game so that shows the ambition of these guys.
“The players worked really hard and that was a good workout for us. There are some sore bodies out there. That was a tough game before Munster.”
A try from Rob Dewey after just seven minutes on the Firhill turf gave the home side the perfect start.
Flanker John Barclay turned over possession and began an unstoppable counter attack. Back-row colleague Kelly Brown was the conduit who put Dewey away for a try on his home debut. Starting stand-off Ruaridh Jackson added the extras, 7-0.
Wasps pulled a try back when Varndell crossed for his first but the missed conversion from Dave Walder meant the Warriors’ lead was intact before the boot of Jackson stretched the lead to put them in 10-5 up at the break.
Half-time score: Glasgow Warriors 10 – 5 London Wasps
Lineen rang the changes at half time with no less than eight alterations to the Warriors’ on-field XV.
An exchange of penalties ensued but the difference remained as Walder and Parks – on for Jackson – were on target from penalty attempts before Varndell squeezed through midfield touched down for his second to bring the scores level at 13-13.
Walder made no mistake with the conversion and put his side in front for the first time in the match.
However, the home side and their fans refused to give up on a deserved win and were rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts with which Dan Parks made no mistake to seal the win.
Full-time score: Glasgow Warriors 16 – London Wasps 15
