Madeleine McCann could be angry with her parents and may reject them if she is ever reunited with them, a child psychologist has warned.

Search goes on for MadeleineDespite speculation that Madeleine may have been killed, Kate and Gerry McCann are determined to find their daughter.

They have pledged to continue the search for their eldest child but experts have given a warning.

They say that even if she is found alive, the four-year-old could be so psychologically damaged by her ordeal that she will have lost the natural bond with her parents.

Child psychologist Ruth Coppard said that as time goes by Madeleine will start to forget her parents and would probably turn away at first if she was found.


The Yorkshire-based practitioner said: "A child builds up a strong bond with its parents and if they are suddenly taken away from them, they feel betrayed.

"With Madeleine, there would definitely be a feeling of hurt and betrayal, and it is a possibility she could feel very angry towards her parents.

"If they are re-united, it won't be a case of falling right back into old routines.

"It will take a tremendous amount of effort from a lot of people to rebuild the bond.

"Once she has calmed down she would eventually accept them back as her parents, but it could take months, even years, for her to trust them enough to be her old self."


McCanns still clinging to hopeAnd Ms Coppard believes Madeleine could forget her parents altogether if she has been cared for well.

She added: "The longer Madeleine is missing, the more likely it is that she will forget her parents altogether.

"Children need to be loved and they are always looking for someone who they can have that loving attachment with.

"Maddie could maybe remember being happy in her first three-years of life, but she probably wouldn't be able to recall who she had those happy times with.

"If she is in the arms of another family, who care for her tremendously, she could eventually build up the kind of emotional bond with them she once had with her parents.

Madeleine vanished 104 days ago from a holiday chalet in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz as her parents dined at a local restaurant.

The Portuguese woman also arrested has been released with charges

The Italian man arrested for attempting to extort reward money in the case of the missing British toddler, Madeline McCann, has been remanded to custody by the National Court in Madrid.

The order came from Judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska after the suspect, 61 year old Danilo Chemello, turned down an offer for immediate extradition to France, under the international warrant issued for his arrest.

Terra España reports that France, who charges him with ‘illicit association’ reportedly related to organised crime, now has 40 days to process the extradition application.

The Portuguese woman who was arrested with Chemello in Sotogrande, Cádiz province, last Thursday has meanwhile been released from custody after appearing before the San Roque court assigned to the case.

54 year old Aurora Vaz Pereira was released with unspecified charges and must report back to the court every two weeks.

Both suspects’ passports have been retained by the authorities.

While Maltese investigators are probing reports of possible sightings of Madeleine McCann on the island, next week’s performance by Canadian rocker Bryan Adams will include a special dedication to the missing child.
Bryan Adams has been at the forefront of the ‘Find Madeleine’ campaign and a video montage of the toddler set to his record single Everything I Do was released on the Find Madeleine website.
It shows a mixture of photos and video footage of the four-year-old, smiling and looking at the camera. Adams gave special permission for the song to be used.
The video urges people to look out for the distinctive mark in Madeleine’s right eye – which her captors cannot alter – backed by the rocker’s 1991 hit, which was No.1 for 16 weeks.
The lyrics to this song go: “Look into my eyes - you will see what you mean to me. Search your heart, search your soul. And when you find me there, you’ll search no more.”
Madeleine vanished from the McCann family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3.
Sources close to the entourage of the superstar of Maltese descent have told the British media that during his Malta concert, Bryan Adams will sing “especially for Madeleine” calling on the international media not to let go of the world-wide search for the missing girl.
