- Me, Myself, and I
- Right. I lived in Rutherford, NJ for 12 years before moving to Carrickmore, Tyrone (Northern Ireland) and attended the CBS in Omagh. During that period I got involved in local drama groups, and later into the local music scene. About 3 years ago I came to Belfast for University to study a BSc in Psychology from Queens. I then lived in Belfast for a further two years, working as an Underwriter for the Alliance & Leicester. Previously I played lead guitar with local rock group Cuckoo Rass. I've now found myself in the United States working for a bank in Rock Centre (yeah, I really hadda check my rock n roll cred at the door there. I've even had to lose my earing...) and getting involved in the music scene over here. Everything's a bit crazy at the moment, but I'll try to keep my page updated with my stories of life in this strange new world!
- Music
- could fill all the boxes with this. Been listening to Leonard Cohen lately. Getting into that. Van Morrison, The Band, Eric Clapton, Jeff Buckley, Allman Brothers, Zeppelin, and Rory Gallagher have all seen a lot of plays lately too. I regularly go through phases of music I'm listening to, so that list is liable to change at any time without notice. I'm also a big fan of Soundgarden, Kyus, Pearl Jam, Tool, NIN, Queens of the Stoneage, Muse, Christy Moore, Jimi Hendrix, The Smiths, The Cure, Helmet, Faith no More, and the Manics. Started listening to ivor cutler recently too. He's nuts.
- Films
- Adaptation, Meaning of Life, the Usual Tarantino Films, Big Lebowski/Fargo and other selected cohen brothers stuff, Dazed and Confused, Dr Strangelove
- Sports
- Can't say I'm really a sports person. I don't drive though, so I have to walk everywhere, guess that keeps me fit ... ish. I make up for my unhealthy lifestyle be eating very little and chainsmoking. Yeah, I guess you could say I'm a born athelete.
- Scared Of
- Dragons
- Happiest When
- Almost certainly when performing in one way or another. I originally wrote this saying that it was when I'm playing a gig, but I think it's always been when I'm doing anything on stage, be it music or something drama related. I'm always in a good mood the day I'm going on stage, although still get anxious before going on. I've been doing this sorta stuff since I was 12, you'd think it'd wear off... It does piss me off though that I've done so little lately, but things are looking up on that front...

A Day in the Life
Ok, a quick update here, as there is only so much that can happen in the space of 2 or 3 days, but I thought I should document this part of what I can only discribe as an "Adventure".
Turns out that in Hoboken, the first saturday in march every year is Hoboken St. Patrick's day. There is a fairly large irish community in this town, and they have a parade one, and all the bars are packed. You have to queue up at around 8 in the morning!
In the end up, I slept in and wasn't really in the mood for hitting the bar at 9am. I got my camera, and thought I'd take a few pictures of my town on a pretty festive day. The first two photos in the album are two views from my window. It would have been a nicer photo last week; the hill was all covered in snow. It's also a pity that we can't get on the roof anymore (they must have known we were up there, and have since closed it off) You get a great view of midtown from there. I also took a few photos from the docks. This is about 4 blocks from my house, and is where you can get the ferry across the hudson from Hoboken to Downtown Manhatten. I've yet to take the ferry, but I'm looking forward to it.
I got down before the parade had started (this was around 1), and got a cool snap of Washington Street; the main strip in hoboken; completely deserted. Not something you often see. There's also loads of pictures of wanna be irish men and women. The parade was nothing too exciting, but it was surreal being at another country's st patricks day parade... two weeks early!
After the parade, I got food and thought I'd stop in a bar and see what the craic was. I went down to Scotland Yard, which is a local blues bar that I've been to a few times. I like it. It's dark and dingy, and reminds me a little bit of Lav's Back Bar (before they did it up). I randomly ran into Eric and some of my other Rutherford friends in there. In over the 100 bars in that town, I still managed to run into people I know. Crazy coincidence.
So we got in the festive mood during the day, met all sorts of characters, and ended up in a houseparty out in Jersey City. I have to admit that I didn't get many photos after this point, but we had been drinking pretty steady all day, and I was in no shape to be wielding a camera. In the end up, we were all home by about 11 O'Clock, and i was done for the day. It was a lot of fun though, and1 Comment 632 days

New York Conversation
Damn - 85 days since I updated this thing... how things have changed!
Ok, well i alluded to having a job in my status thingy. What actually happened was that after weeks of a demoralising job hunt, eventually I got offered 3 at the same time. One dealing with American Depository Receipts (essentially these are international stocks, but sold on the NYSE/Dow - you technically hold the stock in a different country) and two jobs within Merrill Lynch. I got offered a job working in the World Financial Centre and one working in Rockefeller Centre. I preferred the feel of Mid-town and it looked like I would get a lot more experience. So these days I am working for two financial advisors on the 24th floor of 1251 Ave of Americas in Rock Centre. It's right across the road from the Radio City Music Hall (although I've yet to go to it) It was really nice around christmas and new years time, and I'm really looking forward to St. Patricks day - they parade goes right past our building. I hope to get the day off, but if not, I'll look forward to seeing the parade from 24 floors up!
I've also moved out of my aunt and uncle's house - they were great to me, but I needed my own space. I'm now living in Hoboken. Great town - it's a mile square, with over 100 bars. Lots of young professionals, and a pretty cool music scene. The commute to port authority is about 10 minutes, and the path train runs right through the night. I can also get the ferry over if I choose to take the scenic route (although it does leave me downtown in the financial district.). In fairness, I'm not too bothered about hanging around the city as much at night any more, it's too expensive, and not as much fun as Hoboken has been, although The Village area of NYC is great. Tonnes of great clubs, bars, and music venues. I've had a few pub crawls down there that have ended at 4 or 5.
It's getting scary - people are now telling me they can just about hear my accent. I'm terrified that I'm getting a US accent. Scary beanz guys. I know I had it a little when drunk at home, but it's bad when it's happening while sober! In my defence though, I have to balance keeping my accent, and being understood at work. I never thought we had so many words that only we used. I asked for Tipex in work the other day, and they all laughed at me. turns out I should be saying "white-out". Go figure.
I'm currently studying for my Series 7 exam. This will certify me to be a stock broker in New York. When I first heard of it, I figured it'd be one of those stupid little tests you can pass easily, but the study material is about the size of the phone book, and the exam is 4 hours long. I've been working pretty hard at it though, and hope to be able to sit the exam in about a month or so. That'll increase my wage at work too.
I've also come into a gorgeous acoustic guitar whilst out here. Occasionally on a saturday, Anne-Marie (my ex-babysitter!) and Eric (my crazy marine friend) visit Mark and Paula's house. They are a slightly older couple (about 40 or so) with a small child. Mark usually cooks up a big dinner, we drink wine & whiskey, have a bullshit, then start to play music. I usually bring my electric, mark on the acoustic, and Eric has started playing the bass. Me and mark'll sing a few songs and we'll just generally hang out. It's a lot of fun. Mark was selling one of his acoustics, and I said I'd be interested in seeing it. He gave me a lend of it and told me to hold on to it for as long as I wanted, and I said I'd buy it off him if I liked it. We were discussing the guitar, and I was saying how I wanted to put a bone bridge in it, lower the action, maybe put some brass pins in it, and do some truss rod adjustments, but the sound and feel of the guitar was excellent and I would be interested in buying it. I was actually leaving it back to him because I was moving out of my house, and didn't want to take it with me before I paid for it. He'd been talking about $400 for it. I tol2 Comments 636 days
