Biography
Its unmediated approach to song writing, and ballsy neglect for the consensus of "cool", has fuelled the rise of one of the UK's hottest new acts. Enter CITY, a 4 piece carnival of lush pop sensibilities and uplifting rock ‘n’ roll.
Alloa, Scotland isn’t quite regarded as the most remarkable of towns in producing great music – in fact, with the exception of a couple of aging pub bands doing the circuit, you could almost get away with saying that the small mining town in Central Scotland was musically defunct and it's ironic that Alloa now plays home base to such an uplifting and positive collective of young men.
The foundations of the band were set in 2003 when then 17 year old Stephen McCrorie found 15 year old Phillip Ritchie sharing the same bill at a local show – funnily enough at the function suite of a social workers pub in the rough end of Alloa. The pair struck an awkward friendship, left the bands they played in and began writing songs together – sending ideas over the internet via plastic headphones that had microphones on them.
Fast forward a couple of years the pair have seen their relationship turned into that of best friend and co-worker status. They have enjoyed touring support slots with the likes of Motion City Soundtrack, The Like, Ghosts and Oceansize and recently acquired the services of Alan Cuthbertson and Niall McMenamin (Kelly Clarkson, Damian Marley, The Dykeenies and Art Brut) to produce the bands recent 3-track Demo/EP which both describe as a “collection of great wee songs.”
McCrorie, now 22, is somewhat of a nomad – living out of the boot of his car, splitting his living between his fellow band mates parents’ houses. His life could be described as more of a transit as the opening lyric of Planets suggests, “I’m in my car… Again.”
“I live out of my car ‘cause… basically, I don't have the time to fit in all my day to day activities... Then go to rehearsals. It’s a sacrifice though that I’m willing to make for the enjoyment and passion I get from it. I guess that sort of unorthodox lifestyle influences a lot of our writing too – there are many underlying references to my distaste for routine…”
The bands rehearsals embody that ethos also – turning up to go through the live set is a strict no-no. “Our rehearsals can be anything from us sitting down with a piano to us going down to our bassists, getting pissed in his garage, recording whatever and listening to it back the next morning and trying to figure out what the hell we did.”
The band, despite numerous line-up changes, has always been the baby of McCrorie and Ritchie and it is only in the summer of 2007 that has seen the band peak as a unit. “We’ve had numerous members before, but we can safely say that we are stronger than we've ever been since recruiting Liam and Barry. A couple of the most talented people we know.”
The line-up of the band now boasts much flexibility in the writing department. It is not so much your default Vocalist, Guitarist, Bassist, Drummer set up. Chapman is an established pianist while taking on drumming duties, locking with bassist Mop who also has a great knowledge in sound production and has collaborated with many artists out-with the confines of Alloa, Ritchie’s lyricism is making its debut in newer songs while McCrorie is at times taking on the role of lead guitarist.
With its latest demo so far having received great praise and with fresh and consistent material currently being developed at their studio in Central Scotland - this band show nothing but promise. For anybody who has ever rocked, clapped, danced or tapped – enjoy
