Over mij

Me, Myself, and I
welcome to the kennels of The Ballachulish Hellhounds! The Ballachulish Hellhounds were originally formed in the highlands of Scotland around 1988 by a collection of local musicians, stoner buddies and a drum machine. They played only 2 gigs, one in the Kinlochleven Masonic Hall. The other in the Loch Leven Hotel. Both gigs fell into local legend, with many claiming to have witnessed one or both these momentous events. The Hellhounds went their separate ways, until October 2004 when a chance meeting in Glasgow between two of the original Hellhounds after a lot of cheap whisky and jamming, the slabbering beast that is The Ballachulish Hellhounds could not be silenced. Thus the Hellhounds reformed as an acoustic bluegrass/blues duo. The Hellhounds have been playing selected gigs around Scotland for the past 2yrs enthralling audiences with their free flowing, honest, entertaining, balls to the walls good-time mayhem!

  • 2008....................so far so good!

    Its been a while................2008 a quick recap....:)
I suppose thats the end of summer then, cold nights, rain, big coats and umbrellas, poo.
Im going to write a wee recap of our year so far, in case i forget what we were up too, and i will forget :) :)

The Hellhounds year started in February with a "home" gig at the Free Candy Sessions, guesting with us that night was Ian Fraser from The Scuffers playing some wicked bass.
A top gig was had by all and we got a chance to try some new tunes out.

Next up was a live session on sunny govan radio (103.5fm)on the switchback radio show in March.
Big thanks to Paul for having us and having a brilliant show to boot!

April brought us playing our first electric rock show for 3 yrs as The Electric Hellhounds @ Nice n Sleazys, this brought some thoughts about possibly recording some of the tunes. More about that later.......:) And we had a debut for John Murphy on drums, who enjoyed himself so much, he decide to stay. Good lad........
Also in April we took part in the first ever Underground Sessions on Glasgow's Subway system. That was an absolute hoot, followed by an assault on The Clutha Vaults for an impromtu session while the main band were having a pee or something, hehe you have to watch out for us!

May saw The Hellhounds headline a show for Stripped Bare @ The Vale, Glasgow.
This was our first show with fiddler Sara Ann Cull and.........well i pretty much covered it in the blog on www.myspace.com/thehellhoundsuk
In June we supported The Tannahill Weavers @ The Paisley Art Centre celebrating the life of Danny Kyle. This was the first time we all played sober, quite enjoyed it to be honest.
The sobriety only lasted till we got back to Glasgow and parked the cars, then it was business as usual :)

We had a wee break in July to rehearse tunes for our forthcoming album and then we come to August........

First stop in August was The Twa Tams, Perth playing The Tartan Heart Festival Fringe with local band The True Gents who were awesome! We also debuted Crawford Smith as our new bass player or "Cousin Cleetus" as we like to call him!
The following week we headed up to Belladrum to play the main Tartan Heart Festival
Sunshine, rain, camping, booze and jamming in the middle of the afternoon, bliss!!

August also saw our first "local" gig for almost 20yrs @ The Clachaig Inn, Glencoe
A night of meeting old friends, new friends and a shed load of folk camping for the weekend. Needless to say the gig was a belter, dancing, drinking and someone getting thrown out on his ass while we were playing, good times........

In September it was 2 studio parties for The Hellhounds one @ The Tollhouse Studios as part of One Creative Scotland.
This was another Electric Hellhounds gig and we had the time of our life. And yes we were the last to leave....again!
The other one was just myself and Zander playing as a duo for the first time this year, though we did manage to rope Rebecca McChesney (The Parsonage Choir) and Lesley from the Carlton Jug Band to sing harmonies on most of the tunes.
I cant thank Barny, Jake and the crew at Carlton Studios for such a grand night, and again we were the last to leave :)

So to October...........The Electric Hellhounds have our first day recording on the 12th Oct @ Carlton with Danny Mitchell twiddling the knobs for us (oo-er!)
This will be part of the afore mentioned album. The album will be called simply Hellhounds with 2 distinct parts.
One part will be "Ballachulish" which will be the old timey/bluegrass tunes and "Electric" will be our electric tunes.
Dont expect electric versions of bluegrass tunes on the "Electric" part of the album, The Electric Hellhounds are a different beast to the old time tunes we play acoustic. We will be showcasing some of the electric tunes on 24th October @ The 13th Note if you fancy a wee taster :) and The Electric Hellhounds myspace www.myspace.com/theelectrichellhounds will have some prev

    Dochan,

Magic Jack lives on! Being an original member of his first band Magic Jack and His Heavy Friends nothing like seeing the lineage. I actually have a tape somewhere that I got from Lucy Hall of one of the gigs. Funny what you can find on the net eh?

    Take care,
