Creating authentic rock music that appeals to the masses while still connecting with the listener in a vulnerable, personal place isn’t an easy feat. But for Albany, Oregon based Falling Up, the idea of presenting a positive message with intense, urgent backing music is one of its primary tasks. According to lead vocalist Jessy Ribordy, “…We’re going to make music that’s real and honest, [so] people can feel safe with us. That’s what we’d like to achieve as a band.” Falling Up transformed into a full-time musical project after the guys graduated high school in 2002. This was the dream of Jesse Ribordy, bassist Jeremy Miller, drummer Josh Shroy and later, guitarist Micah Sannan and Adam Taylor on keys. Falling Up was signed to the Tooth and Nail label the summer of 2003 and soon recorded their debut album Crashings produced by Aaron Sprinkle (Kutless, Jeremy Camp) released in February of 2004. A huge hit at radio, Crashings garnered three back-to-back ..1 rock singles including Broken Heart, Bittersweet, and Escalates, and sold 100,000 copies. The group’s sophomore project Dawn Escapes graduated the band to the next level, honing their sound into an even truer musical and lyrical representation of who they are. By teaming up with famed producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Cold, Incubus, Chevelle) the group took some stylistic risks in an effort to extend the band’s reach to both Christian and mainstream audiences. The collaboration proved successful catapulting singles “In My Dreams-Exit Calypsan,” and “Contact to ..1 on the R&R rock chart. Over the years Falling Up has grown into a comfortable groove of who they are, and their influences easily echo through their lyrics. Of “Blue Like Jazz” author Donald Miller, Ribordy comments “I love how [Miller] doesn’t use scripture formulaically. You can tell he takes time to think about his work, but it just seems to flow out of his life and has relevance. That really influences me…” Never was the band’s innovation more evident than in their newest offering, “Exit Lights” an electronic, vibe-focused remix album released September of 2006. Haled as fresh and diverse by new and established fans alike, “Exit Lights” further proved the guys’ ability to reinvent themselves.
