À propos de moi

À propos de moi
Goin loco down in Acapulco

I listen the slow beat of the madmen's drums, heralding the coming time of rain. I hear the relentless tide of humanity's folly, swirling over a still glassy beach. Though concerned with abstract notions of wonder and beautiful melancholia, the clouds over Vladivostok never cease to amaze me in a distant kind of way. I may come to regret time passing my enraptured, static countenance, but its restless tumult has not yet inspired me to shift my gazing mind. If anyone asks, the joker's lines are his own, each real and translucent. I will not dispute it, no matter how wary I am told to be, the faultless clarity attracts the lazy and the restless consciousness; I make no apologies.
(You genuinely can't beat a paragraph or two or pretentious bullshit, eh? :D )

  • Watchmen

Went to see Watchmen on Saturday (07/03/2009) hopin for a good action movie without the complexity of the comic, but without destroyin Moore's epic either. I got it, sort of.

    ***SPOILERS***

I was obviously goin in to the thing knowing the plot and more concerned that that it was faithful to the original than anything else. The main change to the plot came at the end, when the massive psychic blast in New York was replaced by a series of explosions in the world's major cities. Instead of using the threat of extra terrestrial attack to unite the world, Doctor Manhattan is Veidt's common enemy. I kinda get how this was needed, the alien looked a bit stupid and Moore's whole addition of psychicness at the last minute was....a bit odd. At the same time though, Veidt talks about earth's 'punishment' and is generally much more of a one dimensional villain than was the case with Moore's work. Having Nite Owl act as the audience's conscience by fruitlessly beating Veidt after the deed was done, and falling to his knees with the obligatory Hollywood 'NOOOOOOO!' at Rorschach's death weren't needed at all. I thought it took away a bit from Moore's attempts to make the audience think for themselves with his own ending.

It's been suggested that the film left open the possibility of a sequel (which would be the single worst thing that Hollywood could realistically do), but I don't see it happening. I expect mixed reactions at best from the aficionados, while most of the boy/girlfriends dragged along with no prior knowledge of the comic will have struggled to keep up. The director, Snyder, has definitely been ambitious in trying to squeeze as many as possible of the infinite asides, foreshadowing, metaphors and other bits and pieces of genius that fill the comic into under three hours of film, and it strikes me that it may well get in the way of the plot for noobs. The scene in which Rorschach and Nite Owl work out that Ozymandias is behind it all will be a struggle to understand, and some changes to the dialogue, like having both groups of masked heroes referred to as 'Watchmen', complicates things unnecessarily. Some omissions make themselves felt too: Dan mentions the Keene Act without there having been any real prior explanation to what it was. A nice inclusion for those in the know - impossible to understand for the rest, it highlights the limitations of trying to explain the backstory of masked crimefighters mostly through the pastiche of pictures and scenes during the opening credits. It also shows that the filmakers found no adequate way to incorporate Moore's between-chapter essays, etc into the movie's narrative. Add in the fact that Snyder seemed desperate to get an 18 age rating for the movie by making the sex and violence more gratuitous and drawn out than in the comic (think Rorschach dealing with the child kidnapper), and the numbers interested in a sequel will be limited.

Other negative points include the prosthetics on Silk Spectre I and Nixon (though Nixon wasn't too bad as a minor character, didn't need him to be seen more in the movie than he was in the comic though), and the CGI for Manhattan, who I think will age badly for audiences. I think that Laurie was a bit too skanky, the fact that she was struggling with her role as heroine and Jon's lover seemed overshadowed by the flirty look she constantly wore. Also, the movie's attempts to be a bit more grown up than others in the genre stalled when the director seemed to feel that we needed to be spoon fed the revelation that the Comedian is Laurie's father. I mean, we all got it the third time, just stop.

Now for the positive bits (woo!) Rorschach was great. Really, excellent casting. My plans for a series of Rorschach masks for next hallowe'en continue a-friggin-pace. They got the Comedian down to a T. And the backgrounds were very good, obviously a lot of effort put in by Snyder, and you could tell that they used the comic itself for storyboards. I had

  • The Arcade Fire

    In the Phoenix Park.

Magnificent. Really. We were against the barrier at the front of the pit. Good crowd, no shoving, though when they played Intermission one girl 'thought (she'd) heard it somewhere before).

They played pretty much everything you'd want to hear, delighted that Windowsill was in there, as well as My Body Is A Cage and Tunnels. Just need to hear Kettles now and I can die happy :)

The other thing I love about the band is the sheer joy they obviously get out of the performance of their own songs. The way they danced around the stage and just had fun was great to see. It also made me kinda wish that I was a member. So, y'know, if any of you are reading this, I'm available. It's not like I wouldn't play my part either, I've noticed that you don't yet have a tin whistle specialist.

Anyways, after the gig Win (lead singer, etc), William (bass, etc) and Richard (hitting stuff, etc) all came up and shook my hand. Not because I was in the front row with a few dozen others whose hands were shaken, oh no. It's because I'm special.

    Very very special.

  • So....Alvin and the Chipmunks.....

    ............. Yeah.

They eat each other's poo now. http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=q1vVno...

What's worse is that "the trailer for the movie uses many scenes from contemporary news sources to show screaming crowds, including one scene that is taken from the Hillsborough disaster, where 96 people died."

This may possibly be an attempt by the studio to increase the movie's popularity by highlighting events which can safely be described as marginally worse.

Then I read that 'Brash Entertainment has announced that this December will see the release of a new Alvin and the Chipmunks rhythm/music game, set to be released alongside the forthcoming film, featuring the Chipmunks playing Blink 182 and REM songs at venues from Burning Man to the ultimate "Rockathonapalooza."'
and OH MY GOD EVERYONE MUST DIE EVERYONE MUST DIE NOW.

    :(

I also get hundreds of invites. Who those invites are from is top secret. >___>

Amazingly there is a birthday going on this weekend in The Stand. AND. Omg. News. The Stand got all done up. : OOOOO!!!!
The bar has moved. They've new seats and tables and stuff. It actually looks really nice. It's a shocker, I know. Instant stunage when you walk in.
I just opened last night. I was there. >____> And before you say anything. I wasn't drinking. I was driving. I'm not an alcoholic. =D

Electric Picnic. Who's playing at that this year? I should've tried going to that. Heh. Bit late now. xD There's always next year.
I'll have to see yourself and Mary before I head off to Vienna next month. I don't know when exactly I'm leaving yet. Haven't booked my flight yet.

Australia is lovely. And I speak from the experience. xDDD I want to go back but I don't want to be on many planes for eight to twelve hours. =[

Australia was pretty awesome. It's full of koalas and didgeridoos but not koalas playing didgeridoos. I'd like to go back again. But not for a long time. >___> I've seen enough of planes for the time being. Heh.

I've been getting these really annoying invites to become a member of stupid groups on here. I get, like, twenty a day. D:

I've been bored since I got back. Heh. There's not a lot to do 'round here.
