Sir Michael Parkinson has launched a tirade against Jade Goody.

The veteran broadcaster told the latest issue of Radio Times that the late reality TV star represented "all that is paltry and wretched about Britain."

He said: "Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it's significant, it's nothing to be proud of. Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it's not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di.

"When we clear the media smoke screen from around her death, what we're left with is a woman who came to represent all that's paltry and wretched about Britain today.

"She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated, ignorant and puerile. Then she was projected to celebrity by Big Brother and became a media chattel to be exploited til the day she died."

As people have gathered, I am getting rather fed up with some of our own fans. Not, it has to be said, those who disagree with me on the Songs Debate; that's as much part of their democratic right as its mine to write this stuff in defence of the singers.

Let me clear one thing up first. When at the game, I don't sing these songs myself, because frankly I don't personally feel that they belong at the football. I don't believe people should wear frilly pyjamas at the football either, but as I have nothing against them personally and fail to see how they could offend I have no issue with anyone who wants to wear them to a match.

This is a somewhat weak analogy when taken on its own, but I hope you will consider it in light of what I am about to say.

The fans amongst us who dislike these songs are well within their rights to say that and to make their feelings clear. Where they lose me, and I suspect a good many others, is when they resort to two corollary arguments which, to me, make no sense whatsoever, the first being that the Celtic fans who indulge in this drag us to the level of the Rangers support.

Let's be clear here, I am NOT defending the Nacho Ned chant, which I believe to be ignorant and reprehensible. The morons who came up with that one deserve condemnation and those who sing it are acting like the worst kind of cretins. The Charlie Adam's sister song is a pure wind-up, the kind of stuff football fans have been slinging at each other for eons and it will continue as long as a ball is being kicked in the game. I find it childish and a little moronic, but only a halfwit could seriously put that song on the same level as BJK and other such filth.

Someone said earlier, if we are going to remove the political element from the Celtic support we need to get rid of the Palestinian flags (I have one myself) and the Che Guevara t-shirts (I own one of those too!). Dare I suggest the Tartan Army would be in serious trouble for sending the English "homeward to think again"? And how is Flower of Scotland, which boasts of fighting and dying for a wee bit of hill and glen, less offensive to the sensitive natures of some as a song which suggests that on Easter Morn that Irish men should be proud and glad of the land where they were born? Simply because not everyone who sings it is Irish? That's an odd argument, if you ask me.

Similarly, if the Tartan Army were singing an anthem to William Wallace, would that place them in grave danger from UEFA, as has been suggested by Celtic fans singing about Joe McDonnell? I seem to remember Glasgow City Council putting on a Free Nelson Mandela event some twenty odd-years ago, when he was in prison for conspiracy to overthrow the South African government; wasn't he head of the ANC guerrilla wing at one time? And aren't they now a globally recognised political party? Like Sinn Fein?

I daresay the halfwits in the Rangers Trust, who's own statement tonight closes the case, for me, once and for all, that Catholic Schools really ARE better (that was a joke, I hope you understand), can allege their own political stance ..... but when not associating them with the worst sectarian murderers in the North of Ireland (The IRA NEVER fought a sectarian war, incidently ....... they can't even get their facts right) their own politics most closely resembles that of the Nazis or the KKK.

Sectarian. Racist. Their code of religious and cultural supremacy, symbolised in their chant "we are The People", fuels a mindset which went on the rampage in Manchester and beyond, and I have made the ghastly prediction that it will lead to murder on one of their foriegn trips someday, as it has led to murder numerous times here on the streets of Glasgow.
