How you doing people, pull up a stool, what you drinking?

The Caledonian is a bar in James Square, Crieff. we have been open about a summer short of two years and have been bringing a bit of lounging to the good people of Crieff.

We serve great fresh bar food and have a programme of live music throughout the year.

We're always upto a fair amount of other things too, We have a fair amount already planned for 09, check out our live music listings, as well as some of our other events.

Live Bands Hall of Fame
We have a programme of Live music in the bar, some of the bands that we have had thus far include the Stevie Agnew Band, Southpaw, Thick as Thieves, On the Wagon, Gaberlunzie, North Sea Gas, Andy Chung, The Lomond Celidh Band, Blue Dubh and we have plenty more coming over the summer months.Check out our whiteboard for details of whats on. We want to put a broad selection of music on so if you think something might be our bag let us know.
Whats happening??
All the Six Nations Rugby Live - We even got us a big new shiny teklly this year for the far corner of the bar. Oh Yeah !!
Sports
We like all the major pub sports including jenga, connect four, tiddely winks and of course my favourite the three legged fandango. We are also the proud sponsor of Strathearn Grove FC. C'mon the mighty grove!!!
Pool Room
We are putting (mid-october) two pool tables in our downstairs room, and darts and are now looking to build teams to compete in the pool and darts league, Pool on a Thursday night, darts on a Monday. Send us a message or even better drop by the bar if you are intrested. c
Happiest When
Theres good juju in the bar, five people or one hundred and fifty dosen't matter, when theres a good feelin in the air, a humble bar is a beautiful thing.
Charity Vibe...
Just raised £ 325 for Oral and Signing in Strathearn this year (Oasis) who help teach sign language to deaf people and their familes. Think we are goinf to help Crieff Cottage hospital with their garden project this year.
Recruitment
Currently the good ship lollipop has a full crew. But when the warmer weather kicks in and people are thicker on the ground we will be making us some appointments.

  • Focus on Old Crieff - Strathearn Herald Feb 22 - 08

    ...
The Strathearn Herald in association with the Caledonian Bar in James Square, Crieff are planning to run a Photographic Exhibition during the month of April.

The theme of the exhibition will be “Old Crieff” and it is hoped that many of the contributors of the fantastic pictures which appear in the “Way it Was” page in the Herald will agree for their photographs to be used.

All pictures will be scanned, prepared, mounted and hung by Craig Reekie, proprietor of the Caledonian Bar, who is hoping to operate the downstairs function room in the establishment as a photographic gallery/workshop over the summer months.

Commenting on the proposals, Craig said: “We feel that the Herald exhibition would be a fantastic opening exhibition for the gallery. The gallery space that we have is fairly considerable and we feel that the more prints that we can obtain the better the spectacle it will be.

“I would estimate that we would be looking for upwards of 60 images to fill the walls, depending on what size and how creatively we choose to exhibit them.”

With such a wealth of history in the area, it is hoped that the exhibition will create a lot of interest locally and also be an extra attraction for tourists to visit when they come to the town.

And the Herald staff and Craig, with the help of local photographer Jo Cound, have already sourced a number of images which will feature in the display.

If you have an old picture, or a selection of old pictures that you would be happy for the Strathearn Herald and the Caledonian to use as part of the exhibition to celebrate the history of the area, please hand it/them into the Herald as soon as possible.

All pictures will be returned by either post or can be collected from the Herald Office on 7 East High Street, within ten days of them being submitted.

Everyone who contributes a picture will have to fill out a photographic consent form to give their permission for the image to be used.

There is also an area on this to give details about the picture including where and when it was taken, who is featured and as the saying goes, whether or not the picture has a story.

For more information please contact the Strathearn Herald on (01764) 656501.

  • Great Food Review in the Perthshire Advertiser

    Perthshire Advertiser 21 June 07

Former ‘nightspot’ has all the right moves for lunch

    At a glance Jun 22 2007

"LET'S take a trip down memory lane to relive my mis-spent youth," said Jackie, when I suggested lunch this week.

The venue she had in mind was the Caledonian, once Crieff's legendary nitespot, Scorpio's, but now reinvented as a stylish bar/restaurant.

The suggestion suited me fine as I had been meaning to drop in to the establishment ever since I heard that the chef from the late, and very much lamented, Muthill Village Hotel, was now in-situ there.

Disappointingly — for disco-diva Jackie at least — few traces of the Caledonian's previous incarnation remain, although she did get a little misty-eyed when she passed an alcove which could have been the DJ booth, once upon a time.

In fact, the glitterball decor of the '80s and '90s has been wiped out completely, and the space transformed into a stylish and luxe rendezvous.

The Caledonian has once of those menus — increasingly rare these days I'm sorry to say — where everything looks good.

Our dilemma was so great that it took us quite a while - and two glasses of merlot — to make up our minds.

We decided to split a starter of garlic mushrooms, baked with a sharp cheddar cheese, and served on toasted French bread.

This was really, really good, and a larger portion would have made a lovely light lunch on its own, served with a nice glass of something red and fruity. For mains, I went for that old, pub-lunch standard of haddock, chips and mushy peas. The batter was suitably crispy, the North Sea haddock deliciously flaky, the chips freshly-fried, and the peas suitable mushy.

All it was missing was some bread and butter on the side - you can't beat the guilty pleasure of a chip butty.

Jackie — still on the Atkins diet — ordered the entrecote steak, which was served medium rare, with a pepper sauce, more freshly fried chips and all the usual ganishes.

Silence reigned as every last morsel was wolfed down.

We both skipped dessert and ordered two espressos.

lThe Caledonian, 35 James Square, Crieff.

lCost: £29.50, for two people, with drinks and coffees.

lFood: Well-priced, seasonal, local produce, cooked with flair.

    lService: Welcoming and well-informed.

lVerdict: Classy haunt for ladies who lunch.

My monochromatic vibe is only due to a simple point & click camera!! :L If I use colour then the flash washes all the stage lights out! If I dont use the flash, I get camera shake, even with a tripod! :( Hopefully upgrading to a better one sometime soon! Fingers crossed. :D
