À propos de moi
On January 10th Anthony Torres aka "Nu Jerzey Devil" (BWS head Producer) was born in the South Bronx borough of New York City where his family lived on a street called Cedar Avenue, ironically, as he moved to Compton, California on Cedar Block where his venture with Black Wall Street began. At the age of 4 his mother moved the family, consisting of 5 sons and 1 daughter, to New Jersey where it soon became his new hometown. Being the youngest of the 5 brothers and sister, he followed in the path of his brothers who were heavy into the rap life. At the age of 7 Nu Jerzey Devil began rapping and knew he was destined to be in the music game. At the age of 18 he traded a friend a .45 calliber gun for a DJ set up. After rapping over others" beats Nu Jerzey Devil bought himself a Dr. Rhythum beat machine & a Yamaha DJX keyboard and started making his own beats.

  • NJD Interview

Nu Jerzey Devil’s not riding shotgun anymore. With his latest single “Different Girls feat. Lil Wayne” in rotation, the producer/rapper is gearing up for just as much time in the foreground as he spends behind the scenes making beats. XXLMag.com recently caught up with NJD to talk about his music, his bond with Game, wild times in Compton, and wild Norwegian girls.

XXLMag.com: How has it been producing for Black Wall Street? Any different from when you’re working on beats for yourself?

NJD: It’s been really good. They’ve gotten me to where I’m at, so I can’t complain. That’s my family. But it’s definitely different at times. When I’m producing for Game and them, they want that dark, grimy sound that you hear in the streets. For me, it all depends on my mood. I might get drunk and want to make some crazy strip club shit. I’m unpredictable like that. That’s what music is about.

XXL: What was it like living in Compton with Game a few years back?

NJD: Shit, that was probably the worst time of my life. Shootouts like everyday. It was terrible. But I don’t regret it and I wouldn’t take it back for anything in the world. I was going through a tough time when I came out of my little Darkchild contract and Game took me in and embraced me. At that point it was either stay in Jersey and not accomplish anything or go to Compton and hopefully come out with something positive.

XXL: What’s the craziest thing that ever happened over there?

NJD: I brought my brother over to visit and he’s a big pothead from Jersey. He had heard about the kush over there and so the first thing he does is go to the corner store to get a Dutch. Suddenly I hear all these gun shots and I when I go outside I see him scattering on the ground. Luckily one of my friends had pushed him down. But when I noticed it affecting my family I was like, ‘wow, this is really serious.’

XXL: How was Game as a roommate?

NJD: He was cool. Game’s a normal dude. A lot of people don’t know him, so they’ve always got something to say. But with me, he always kept me close and took care of me. We’d go play ball, chill and play video games, hit up the mall. Aside from all the shootouts, he’s a regular guy and I’m thankful to him for taking me under his wing.

XXL: You guys were recently on tour in Europe. What were the some of best cities you visited when you were over there?

NJD: Ah man. The fans showed us a lot of love in Zurich, Switzerland. I don’t know if it was the shirt I wore that said “I love Zurich,” though. Nah, just kidding, they showed a lot of love out there. But for the women, I’m hands down sold on Oslo, Norway. That was one of the wildest nights. If I had to be anywhere in the whole world right now I’d say Oslo, Norway. All of Black Wall Street can vouch for that.

XXL: Speaking of which, how are the stocks on Black Wall Street performing these days?

NJD: Lovely. I’m here and I’m making it. It’s been nothing but a blessing.

  • Nu Jerzy Devil Interview

Black Wall Street member Nu Jerzey Devil is officially making the transition from producer/deejay to producer/deejay/emcee. The Bronx-born, Jersey-raised 29-year-old spoke late yesterday with HipHopDX regarding the forthcoming release of his debut offering as a rapper, Art Of The Devil, and how two of his high-profile Hip Hop mentors, The Game and Lil Wayne, played a role in Jerzey’s expanded repertoire. The current resident of Miami also candidly spoke for the first time on how his time residing in Compton led to his ties to one of the nation’s most notorious street organizations.

Having been the first official member of Game’s BWS crew, Jerzey’s recent decision to move from behind the boards (and the turntables) to behind the mic was not surprisingly at the suggestion of BWS’ leader, as Jerzey recalled, “It’s always been in the back of my mind [to emcee], but one day we was in New York and people just started really [recognizing] who I was. And [after seeing that, Game] was just like, ‘Man, you need to get on your Swizz Beatz shit. You need to start rappin’ or getting on some hooks.’ So I took that shit and ran with it.”

“[After that] I went inside the studio, I felt it out [rappin’], and I liked it,” he continued. “Then I went back to Miami and started working on my own shit. Then [I] did ‘Different Girls’ with Lil Wayne [click to listen]. And then from there, we went on tour. I was opening up for Game overseas [in November]…and when I felt that love, from [there] it was all she wrote. I was like, ‘Fuck it, I’ma do this full-time.’”

And after that final decision last fall to make the move to full-time spitter, Jerzey found a distribution home for his LiveliHood Entertainment, and his Art Of The Devil street album (due March 3). But why the decision to bring his business to Miami-based SoBe Entertainment, and not longtime musical home Black Wall Street?

“I feel like I’m a grown man, [and] I just wanna venture out on my own and do what I gotta do,” replied Jerzey. “Not to sound selfish or nothing like that, but I just don’t wanna wait for nobody. I wanna do me. I wanna be my own creative person. I just wanna do me, period. Game’s a general, I’m a general, [and] two bulls be knocking heads a lot. [And] I just feel like I got more control over here at SoBe, being that I’m my own person over there. And a lot of people know me from Game, so I just wanna step out of that a little bit and pretty much just build my own identity and do me for a second.”

BWS faithful should fear not, as Jerzey’s stepping out is not a sign of his breaking away from the crew.

“It’s Black Wall Street all day, everyday, for life,” said Jerzey. “But I just want people to know me for me, and not [just like], ‘That’s Game’s homie.’”

While Jerzey compares the development of his LiveliHood venture outside of BWS to how Jim Jones’ Byrdgang, Juelz Santana’s Skull Gang, and Freekey Zeekey’s 730 brands all spawned from the original Dipset collective, a more apt comparison of what appears to be taking place aside from Jerzey’s move within the BWS camp is that of the Wu-Tang Clan in the ‘90’s, with affiliated artists spreading the BWS brand through a variety of different major labels.

“A lot of offers [to distribute BWS artists] been on the table,” said Jerzey. “We had Clyde Carson with Capitol [Records]. And it’s other [labels] that’s interested [in distributing BWS]. Like, obviously Interscope is interested. But I think Game just wants to wait and make the right decisions and make the best move. And I don’t think he wants to put all of his eggs in one basket. So every time he [puts out] an artist I think they’ll be on like separate labels, just because you wanna see which label works the best until you really know what’s going on and you know they behind you 100 percent.”

So will a label be joining forces with The Game, Juice [
