"The best live band in the country."
The Guardian

"This is the first band I could ever dance to in the daytime hours without chemical assistance...and that says a lot."
Irvine Welsh - Author of Trainspotting and Filth

"They swing like the devil’s own dick. Alabama 3 beat a righteous drum and party like bastards." Time Out

  • Carl Mesmotron Gig Reports April 08 Alabama 3 Dundee Wed. 23rd April ‘Fat Sam’s’

This aws agod one! That was what it was like. Definitely good…perhaps better than that….but in the A3 tradition…confusing! Never in doubt for the audience in Fat Sam’s was that this would be good. It was, and a good clear sound and first rate mixing made this one of the best performances by this curious band in recent memory.
A3 claim intellectural property rights to some truly poetic songs. That’s good enough for them and so they air a fair amount of pre recorded material at their gigs. I think that is OK considering how involved and complex the songs are. In fact, they are totally honest about that and who cares anyway? They wrote the stuff and even if they just sat in deck chairs on the stage with a good sound system the concert would be top notch.
At ‘Fat Sam’s’ we were treated to a crisp performance. D. Wayne was relaxed after his massive meal in the bar round the corner, Larry was firmly in character and ‘the girl’, well, she could launch many ships. I noticed ‘she’ got some of the most enthusiastic applause. It was, actually, a brilliant performance.
Why? Well, the age range of the audience…from 14 to 65(?) sons, daughters, dads and granddads there to see a band who are ‘doing it’ now. Not like the dreadful retro or comeback kids or them that have never gone away like the no longer rolling Stones.
Why? The lyrics… not boy meets girl or any of the usual splurge…something quite different!
Why? Rock compositions born from a different source, influenced by real life and a respect for some of the heroes of R&B whose sounds never quite broke through.
Why? From start to finish everyone in that auditorium was in a trance…ask the guys on the bar!
Whats confusing is how a band as good as this has only been ‘spotted’ by a faithful following and some film presenters/directors. Those at Fat Sam’s, will not be too worried about that, however. Those who were there saw something that you only see if you are very lucky!
Keep it up A3. Strangely strange has always been a great formula!
Best song? Apart from the stalwarts…Amos Moses (their version!)
    Worst bit? There was none.
