We are different-Exploring different ideas about “living happily after” – Anna Mac Carthy and Katherine O’Donnell
Anna Mac Carthy – “I am one of the organisers of LGBT Noise, Noise is a direct action civil rights group that is campaigning for civil marriage. I would like to outline Noise’s approach to the issue, our use of protest, community engagement, education and discussion. Noise believes that separate rights are not equal rights and that choice of civil marriage should be available to everyone regardless of sexual identity. I would like to discuss the short-comings of the proposed Civil Partnership Bill and have an open discussion on the issue and address any questions anyone might have”.
Katherine O’Donnell takes issue with the argument that lesbian families should seek equality with heterosexual marriage. She wants us to remind ourselves that we lesbians have a heritage of being marginalised outsiders and this position has given us a wonderful vantage point from which we can see how oppression and inequalities work right throughout society. This talk process that we look to feminist-inspired legislation in New Zealand and Canada to see how to dismantle the protected power base of heterosexual marriage, how to make marriage less CONFINING AND EXCLUSIVE and so honour diversity of family and kinship of all of us, making central our concerns to best protect our children and those of us who are dependant on social welfare”.
