- Me, Myself, and I
- LIMERICK, IRE (JULY 19th 0 - Andy Lee got his promising career right back on track with a spectacular tenth-round stoppage of American Willie “The Gladiator” Gibbs before a sold-out crowd in his home town of Limerick, Irelandon Saturday July 19th.
The 24-year-old Irish middleweight silenced many critics who had bailed on him after losing to Brian Vera earlier in the year. Lee produced a brilliant display against Gibbs, dominating nearly every single round before stopping his rated American opponent with just over four seconds left in the fight which took place only miles from Lee’s home.
Gibbs, who hails from the fighting city of Philadelphia, knew that he needed a knockout in the tenth to snatch an upset win, he came out with full force trying to score a knockout but Lee boxed well, although he was cut from an earlier clash of heads. Lee kept his composure; weathered the onslaught before unleashing a devastating right hand to Gibbs that dropped the American to the delight on the deafening crowd. Gibbs beat the count but Lee sensed the end was near and bombarded the game Gibbs with a barrage of accurate powerful punches, pinning the American on the ropes with unanswered shots, referee Emile Tiedt stepped in just as the towel from Gibbs' corner was flying into the ring. Official time was 2:46 of the tenth round.
That prompted understandably wild celebrations - both outside and inside of the ring. The streets of Limerick became festive as the crowd poured out into the streets chanting “There’s only one Andy Lee!, There’s only one Andy Lee!’. As Lee later admitted, he went into the fight under an enormous amount of pressure, firstly because he was coming into the bout on the back of a shock defeat to Brian Vera, and secondly, he was doing so in front of his home fans.
He showed no signs of nerves, though, and boxed beautifully right from the start. “He displayed the skills he always had” said his trainer/manager Emanuel Steward “He’s back on track and heading to the championship. At 24, his future is as bright as ever”.
