  • The end of an era...Happy tears for our old girl

From Benji - The reluctant bourgeoise <bennyboy-22>:

In 1922 the good people of Doncaster had a vision, a vision of a top class football team, playing in a town in a town which had being starved of any sporting achivement. They built a football groung on an old ash pit, with money raised by local firms and football fans, with the addition of 3 wooden stands, added to the original main stand, which was put on wheels and rolled from Bennethorpe (the old ground) to the new sight, which it would sit proudly, looking over the belle vue pitch for another 84 years. Belle Vue was born, a humble stadium, to accomidate a humble following.

The ground was opened by Charles E. Sutcliffe from the Football League on Saturday, August 26 of that year. The opposition was Gainsborough Trinity. The initial capacity was for 7,000 spectators, which was extended year-on-year as finances allowed. In 1938 the capacity of Belle Vue was increased to 40,000 and it was in 1948 that the stadium recorded its highest attendance of 37,099 against Hull City, although apocryphal accounts refute this and claim that many more gained entry to the ground by climbing over walls and thus avoided having to pay.

Belle Vue and the Rovers hit the 1980's in steady decline, with top players like Snodin & Dean moving to a higher level, and attendances struggling to top 1,500. In the later years of the 20th century, as the club's fortunes began to decline and finances became tighter, the capacity of Belle Vue was cut dramatically, falling as low as 4,859 in May 1987 when mining subsidence was found underground beneath the Popular Stand terrace. The lowest point in Belle Vue's long history came during the mid-90's and the Richardson era. A fire in the Main Stand one night in June 1995 caused extensive damage and nine months later Chairman Ken Richardson was arrested after the full time whistle blew on an evening match against Fulham. He was charged with conspiracy to commit arson and was subsequently found guilty. But the crime didnt stop at trying to burn the ground down, indeed, he took the club down with him. In 1997-98, Doncaster also set the record for losses in a season, suffering the humiliation of enduring a record 34 league defeats as they finished bottom of Division Three and went into the Football Conference. Just after this relegation, Richardson was sent to prison. Rovers we're dying.

We in stated John Ryan as chairman, a life time fan & kind business man, he turned the club around with his own money. We returned to the league, five years later as Conference playoff winners, and were Division Three champions the following season. The championship winning feat made all the more amazing, as rovers were favourates to be religated back to the non-league, that season. After the promotion to division 2, talks of a new stadium were no longer a pipe dream & now a reality, the 15,000 seater stadium, on the sight which can be seen from Belle Vue, would be completed in time for january 1st 2007. The date was set, Belle Vue's time was running out.

The old girl was to host 3 more swan songs before her gates are locked for the final time as n 2005-06, Doncaster beat two Premiership teams in the League Cup - Manchester City and Aston Villa. We reached the quarter finals of the competition where they were knocked out by Arsenal on penalties.

Many tears will be shed on the 23rd of December 2006, but you will be fond in my memories, you have survived fires, religation, liquidation & Richardson, but i suppose your greatest down fall will be progress!

"You'll always be our home" - Thanks for the memories

Keepmoat is big and smart, and Rovers deserves a decent stadium, but it just doesn't have the intimacy of Belle Vue.

Belle Vue.. where fans felt like a big, football family; where we could chat to the players; where we could see John Ryan pull up in his car, hop out with a huge smile and come chat to the loyal fans....

Where each game the players would park up, then give us a few words before heading off into the changing rooms...

Where we got soaked standing in the torrential rain, but still laughed and sang our hearts out...

    Belle Vue...

I miss it, but I'm a woman, and I'll love shopping in a bigger supermarket knowing I once used to chant to my football team on that very same ground!
