- I was discovered on the slush pile of a publisher, but before turning to writing full time twelve years ago, I edited dictionaries and taught in secondary schools. All the books I write are about teenagers and include Fat Boy Swim, Skarrs, The Drowning Pond and Firestarter and Tug of War. My latest book, Sugarcoated came out at the end of March 2008. I live in Glasgow with my family.
If you go to my BLOG you can read answers to all of the questions people ask me about writing.

- The Band are my favourite band and Levon Helm of the band is my favourite singer of all time. I love the Beatles but I listen to The Band more.
I also love Kings of Leon, Leon Russell, Van Morrison, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, David Bowie, Pulp, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Al Green, Kate Bush, Christy Moore, Billie Holiday, Mavis Staples and The Staples Singers, Aretha Franklin, Nick Cave, Declan O'Rourke, BB King, Eels, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes, Arcade Fire, The Faces, Neil Young and I've recently discovered the Felice Brothers...that's enough to be going on with. - Films
- The Last Waltz is my favourite film of all time but I also love The Big Lebowski , Almost Famous, O Brother, Where Art Thou? A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Spinal Tap and Westerns like The Proposition and the Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Once and And No Country for Old Men - nearly as good as the book. In The Loop is so fast and so funny that I think I'll need to go and see it again.
- Sports
- The only sport I ever watch is a bit of Wimbledon. I'd rather be doing sport than watching it. I run and play badminton badly
- Scared Of
- Dogs and flying and my husband's driving and bad things happening to the people I love.
- Happiest When
- I'm at home, with my family, and we're all laughing at each other

Thanks for the feedback
It's always lovely to get feedback from people who read my books - especially if it's kind and positive. So thanks to Electro Bea and Emmy Jay who took the trouble to say good things about SUGARCOATED. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book. I didn't write it to suit any age group - it's just a story. There is no sequel planned. You can probably guess why from the end of the book - I can't say much more than that because it would spoil things for anyone who might read it!
Graeme, I'm so glad you enjoyed SKARRS, but sorry that it confused you. Since I wrote it quite a while ago now, I don't think I can go back and change anything. I really enjoyed meeting everyone in GRANGE ACADEMY last week.
Thank you for taking the trouble to get in touch.0 comentarios 271 días

Comments and competition
Hi everyone who has taken the trouble to contact me about the Sugar comp and also just to say hi and positive things. I really appreciate you taking the time.
Hope the Sugar result comes soon. I can't wait to read the winner - and I wonder where she ( OR HE!!!!) comes from, as I get to visit her ( OR HIS) school.

Thank you so much, Ashleigh.
Do YOU think she dies? I have left the ending open, just in case. But....in the real world, what would be the chances of her getting away?
Hi! I love your work, and, in Sugarcoated, I have to ask, does she die?
sugarcoated is immense! my mate got it for me for my birthday last month(: can't wait to read more!
Hey Cathy!
You probably don't know me, but i tried to add u as a friend. I read one of ur books, sugarcoated. I'm wondering what age group you made it for? Also, in the end, does she die?? This is the first book of yours that i've read, but i'm wondering if sugarcoated is part of a series?
Thanx for the time!
Emily

By any chance do you remember the poem about a dinosaur (A T-rex to be precise) at Glasgow University. If I can recall you were judge and I won! I just wondered if you happened to remember me. I love your books even though I am almost 16 and studying 5 highers (leaves me almost no time to read!) Maybe I'll see you again someday.

Hey. What5 do you think? Am I publishing worthy?
Hello,
How do I write in the Read-It Section?
I need to put my story in there.
Many thanks,
Rhys xo
Thank you Holly, for saying so many flattering things. It was lovely to meet everyone at Gilmorhill on Thurs - a fun session that went by very fast. If you go to my blog on bebo, you can read all about how I write and where I get my ideas. I hope some of it is useful to your writing!
All the best,
Cathy
Hello,
A few people have been asking about the Sugar writing competition so I thought I had better make sure that everyone is aware that the competition has now CLOSED. I would hate for anyone to spend lots of time entering when the winner has already been chosen.
That being said, even if there isn't a competition don't let it put you off writing your own short story, it can be great fun.
Cathy
hi,
i love your books!
they're so good!
my family keep tellin me i could be a writer or an artist, but i really want to be an fashion designer, or perhaps a hairdresser, i love designing clothes, and i love hairdressing and eperimenting too!
but i thought i should give the competition ago...
i have one question about it first though...
does it HAVE to 1000 words?
im not very good with limits as i always miss out the ending or an exiting bit as it would need more explaing and then i run!!!
thank you very much!
