Hailed as the worlds greatest living comedian, demand to see the Big Yin in Belfast as part of his smash-hit international "Too Old To Die Young" tour has been unprecedented.

Tim Husbands, Belfast Waterfront managing director, said: "We're delighted to be hosting Billy Connolly again.

"Unfortunately demand has been so overwhelming that many people have been unable to get tickets even though he's here for two more nights than on his first visit in 2001.

"People just can't get enough of Billy Connolly and it seems that no matter how many nights he was to perform, we still wouldn't have enough tickets. There is nobody quite like him and those lucky enough to see him are in for a night to remember."

Speaking about his show Billy said: "It's just territory that I know. Anything that's uncomfortable is great to share with people. It's not necessarily about age, it's about discomfort."

He began his sell-out show in Australia and completed a six-week theatre run off-Broadway in New York and a month-long tour of Canada before selling out over Britain.

Connolly's Billy and Albert video recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987 is the best selling comedy video of all time.

Academics at Glasgow Caledonian University claim he increases people’s tolerance to pain by up to three times.


They surveyed 100 people to find out if comedy, music or mental arithmetic acted as a painkiller. Tests involved subjects placing their hands in icy water while listening to Connolly, music or in silence.

The amount of time they could keep their hands submerged combined with their assessment of how much they suffered produced the final results.

The study, which was commissioned by the Scottish Network for Chronic Pain Research, will be published later this year.
