- Aer Lingus Teoranta was registered an airline on 22 May 1936. The name, Aer Lingus is an anglicisation of the Irish form Aer Loingeas which means Air Fleet. Five days after being founded the airline opened its first service between Baldonnel Airfield in Dublin and Bristol, England, using a six-seater De Havilland 84 Dragon biplane which was named Iolar (Eagle).
Aer Lingus- Irish International continued to expand to the likes of London, Liverpool, Paris, and Amsterdam.
Aer Lingus was unable to opperate during WWII, but resumed operation November 9 1945.
Trans-atlantic service began April 28 1958 using three Lockheed Constelations leased from Seaboard and Western. Flights were inaugerated to New York and Boston. Aer Lingus long haul continued to expand during the 1960's with Boeing 707-120's, 707-320s and of course the mighty 747's.
The airline also added B737's in'69 which they would fly for another 26 years.

History
In 1994 Aer Lingus added 3 state of the art Airbus A330's. EI-SHN St. Flannan/ Fhlainan, EI-DUB St. Patrick/ Padraig EI-CRK St. Brigid/ Brighid. The aircraft were a God send. Two more 300's were added during the 1990's. Three A330-200's were added in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Aer Lingus flew to New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Newwark and Baltimore. Newark and Baltimore were dropped after 9/11. In 1998 the A321, in a 193 seat congiuration, was introduced to the fleet and used mostly on the London Heathrow route. The airlines current livery( colour scheme) was added in the mid to late '90s. In 2000 Aer Lingus began adding the A320.
2001 was a bad year for Aer Lingus even before 9/11, which nearly saw the end of the airline. But under the leadership of Willie Walsh the airline made a miraculous turn around. They repositioned themselves as a " low fares carrier". WW cut jobs, abolished free food on short haul, kissed business class goodbye, and dropped the non airbus aircraft. They followed this with orders for 17 brand new A320's. The new aircraft were delivered in a high density lay out of 174 seats. Low fares also came to long haul aswell.
In short Aer Lingus have really bounced back and have become a much better known airline and a wealthier one.1 Comment 328 weeks
