My first insistence is that you get a thesaurus and use it – words have instant associations that each person will bring with them while reading that are to do with where the word is generally used, its length and its sound; while the instant meaning remains the same, the aftertaste of a word will flow into the subsequent line and change its meaning.

Secondly, and the first will help you with this: a poem is like music, the syllabic rhythm should be such that it is pleasant to pronounce or that it highlights the words that are supposed to stand out, otherwise the meaning gets lost in the obstacle course.
