- A very special alliance was forged in 1995 between the three provincial rugby unions south of the Waitaki River in order to do battle in the new Super 12 competition (now Super 14) . This alliance became known as the Otago Highlanders and in 2000, the word "Otago" was dropped, fully acknowledging the power of three.
The colours of the emblem and jersey have direct links to the three provinces that make up the Highlanders franchise: gold for North Otago; blue for Otago; maroon for Southland. Our three unions have come together to form this strong southern alliance under the banner of “United We Stand.”Come rain, hail or shine our vocal supporters will be there, wanting us to win, willing us to win. When you pull on the Highlanders jersey, whether as a player or supporter you represent yourself, your mates, your region, all those who have worn the jersey before you, and all those who will proudly wear the jersey after you.

Southland and Highlanders keep MacKintosh and Cowan
All Blacks Jamie Mackintosh and Jimmy Cowan ended speculation about their rugby futures today by confirming they will remain with Southland and the Highlanders.
Mackintosh, 24, said he had decided to stay in Invercargill after considering a transfer to Wellington and the Hurricanes.
"I was tempted by the chance of playing in a different environment," the prop said.
"But in the end it came down to where I was from and where I belong. I'm a Southlander and as such, my first Super 14 allegiance is to the Highlanders and that's where I'll stay."
Richard Reid, chief executive of the Otago Rugby Football Union which manages the Highlanders, said he welcomed the decision as the right one for Mackintosh and for the Highlanders.
There had also been speculation about Cowan moving, possibly to Auckland and the Blues, but a Highlanders statement said it was never a serious consideration for the halfback.
Cowan, 27, has played 67 games for the Highlanders and captained them in 2009. He has played 28 tests for the All Blacks since 2004.
Mackintosh has played 23 matches for the Highlanders since his debut in 2007. He made his All Blacks debut on the northern hemisphere tour last year.

I'm not saying they can't
I love Robbie, and I hope he starts.
But I have a feeling he won't
x
Berquist is average.
Robinson is a star.
The Hurricanes are going to start Cruden, why can't we start Robinson?
Yes I'm serious...
I don't think they're gonna start him at the bench at first then let him slowly get used to Super 14.
x
Ahh i thnk thy may blood him in slowy
Berquist 1st 5 need his kikn
r u serious! he'll start.
22. Lynn, not Vainikolo.
I don't think they're going to start Robinson much, but I hope they do. I love watching him play (:

Daniel Bowden got picked up by the Crusaders first.
Hes going to get bugger all game time...
Stupid blues, tell him to sign for Auckland but don't put him in the Blues team.
I would prefer Bowden over Berquist because Bowden can play 12 as well as 10. Oh wow. Nasi Manu, was soooo unexpected. Looks like a good team, but I still would've like Bowden to be in the Highlanders. ):

Kia Ora!
Well I think he might've been loaned back to Hawkes Bay and hes aligned with Otago.
Haha, I reckon Joe Tuineau might be in the wider training squad as a back up to the back up lock. He looks like a promising player.
A shame that Southland got knocked out of the finals. They had a good season.
But Jimmy Cowan.. Wow. He had such a good game in the test against the Wallabies. He was my player of the match..
x
but its not if he wants game time, he plays in the hurricanes region so he would have to go there if selected. but yea if he had alligned himself with southland or otago then got loaned back like Dagg did then he couldve got around it. Shaun Treeby should be selected in the canes squad, so there's still a chance Shoemark will be in the draft.
Donelly and Bekhuis should start lock with Triggs as a back up but I really think we should look at Sam Whitelock for canterbury, Joe Wheeler from Tasman or one of the Bay Of Plenty boys. could even use nauopo there has hes looked strong for hawkes bay at 4 but he would be my starting number 8
Mm true ..
But what if Shoemark wants game time?? He'll have to battle with Ellison and Conrad Smith
But then he would've signed with one of the Highlanders provinces..?
we get hawkes bay players who wouldn't make any other franchise as we get them in the draft. whether peter russell is there or not we would continue to get those players. Shoemark should get a hurricanes contract now that Fruean has gone.
Shoemark is 50/50 myea that would be gay with no hawkes bay players
Do you guys think Shoemarks coming back to the Highlanders?
And I think Peter Russell wants to coach the Hurricanes in 2011... So if hes not our assistant coach anymore, its going to be harder to get Hawkes Bay players.
x
Yea jimmys great on d.
