Michael text me recently when I was in Lincoln. He was asking about the possibility of coming home for Christmas dinner in the Lauriston, which he was booking. My phone was broke, so I could only text him instead of calling him back. He told me everything was dinky-doo with him and he was looking forward to Christmas dinner with his family - which he had missed out on last year. I couldn't make it to the dinner because I'm on call for work this year but he paid for me to be there anyway - just incase things changed.

This is one of the many examples of Michael's generosity. He was a kind brother who always looked after his family.

As the youngest brother I was treated well. Michael used to take me and Mark swimming when we were younger accompanied by my niece and nephew - PJ and Johnny - he took great joy in looking after us and making sure we got what we wanted. He took us everywhere with him challenging us and making us all stronger people.
One of the tough questions I must now answer is, “How many brothers and sisters do you have?” I know my parents will be asked about their children as well. The problem is there is no word for a parent who loses a child. And if there was, no one would speak it, because it would be too horrible to utter. Michael may not be here with us in person but he certainly is in spirit.
You will hear many examples of how smart Michael is. No jokes please. He thought faster than he could write, so he could never stay in the one place for too long. He was always on the go - if he had a p.a. i think she would have retired by now.
Michael wasn't shy, he loved to party because it was his chance to be outgoing and usually the center of attention!. He was as complex as he was beautiful. If the death of one person can make everyone twice as strong, then it is a testament to the brightness of his life, regardless of how soon it went out.

Even in my grief, I realise how easy it would be for family and friends to avoid us. For people to distance themselves from the center of a tragedy they fear they are unable to handle. I am proud to say that this is not the case. All of you have been strong and embraced us when we needed you the most: The food, the cards, the phone calls, the smiles, and the hugs. Without you, our immediate family would have been lost in a sea of grief.. We will never be able to thank you for your kind gestures, guidance and support.
In our grief, we must NOT attempt to erase Michael from our physical world. The tendency will sneak up on us with word choices and slips of the tongue. But Michael’s room is Michael's room. Michael’s clothes are still Michael's clothes, his birthday is still the 10th of December of every year, and he is still the middle child of our family. The pain of his loss will never end, but we must not let it consume us. He is in our photos, in our memories, in the things he touched, the places he went, and in the eyes of the people who really knew him.
Mum & Dad,
Remember on Mother’s and Father's Day, you are still the mother & father of 5 children. Let it be known that Michael was not fragile. He put up with a lot of private issues that would challenge the mettle of the toughest. We will continue to be strong for Michael, for you.and for ourselves.
Michael leaves behind a beautiful boy Ethan who will be cared for by his loving mother, both sets of grandparents, his five uncles and his Auntie. His father will not be forgotten and he must remember how his dad would have done absoloutely anything for him.
I will not hide behind grief. I will think about Michael everyday. I only have love for my brother and when someone asks about my family, I know I will alway say I have 4 brothers Brian Kevin Mark and Michael Thomas Swanson. Gies a wee boost aff ye.
