TONGA'S first contingent of 55 soldiers will be deployed into Afghanistan in mid-December to support a NATO-led International Security Armed Forces Mission (ISAF) there, after completing pre-deployment training in the United Kingdom.
The 1st Tongan Contingent will be based with about 20,000 British troops and US Marines in Helmand Province where they will be conducting force protection and security on the boundaries of the Camp Bastion.
The training currently underway in the United Kingdom will be completed by the second week of December, according to a statement from the Tongan High Commissioner in London, HE Dr Sione Ngongo Kioa, who visited the troops at the Training Centre in Colchester, Essex, on November 24. Half of the Tongan troops are being instructed there by officers from the Royal Air Force Regiments and the other half of the Tongan troops were at other training areas.
They met Commander Satisi Vunipola, Major Tevita Siu Fifita and RAF officers. The Tongan troops have been equipped with uniforms, ammunition and provided with accommodation and daily allowances as part of an agreement with the British Government.
The Tonga High Commission in London, stated that "Tonga's contribution of military personnel will support NATO's led Security Mission into Afghanistan by assisting the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in exercising and extending its authority and influence across the country, paving the way for reconstruction and effective governance."
The comments came in an interview with U.S. network NBC recorded in August and due to be broadcast later Friday.
Extracts were aired on British television and received high attention in the week Charles' son Prince William — who is second in line to the throne — announced his engagement to Kate Middleton.

..Camilla legally will be queen if Charles takes the throne, but when the couple married in 2005 officials said she planned to adopt the title Princess Consort rather than the more traditional Queen Consort.
NBC's Brian Williams asked the 62-year-old heir to the throne if Camilla would become "Queen of England, if and when you become the monarch." Charles hesitated as he replied "That's, well ... We'll see won't we? That could be."
The difference is purely semantic — the role of consort carries no constitutional power. But polls have suggested there is hostility to Charles' divorced second wife, whom he married eight years after the death of Princess Diana, being called Queen Camilla.
At present Charles is Prince of Wales, but Camilla is known as Duchess of Cornwall rather than Princess of Wales — Diana's title.
Camilla was reviled by Diana-lovers as the old flame who poisoned Charles' first marriage. "There were three of us in that marriage," Diana said in a famous TV interview.
Although Diana acknowledged affairs of her own, many Britons vilified Camilla as a royal home-wrecker.
But since her marriage to Charles the British public has warmed to Camilla, who is perceived as down-to-earth and funny. Those qualities were on display this week when she greeted news of Prince William's engagement with the words: "It's wicked
Kate Middleton's engagement to Prince William has sparked an avalanche of Web interest. Top of mind now -- what will Kate's new title be? Is she in line to be queen? And how does Prince Harry figure into all this?
Figuring all this out can be a royal pain, so we did the legwork for you. Here's a quick summary of everything you ever wanted to know about royal marriages but were too common to ask.
Kate's title
Once married, Kate Middleton will unofficially become "Princess Catherine." The official title will likely be Her Royal Highness Catherine of Wales. Eventually, after many years and barring any unforeseen tragedy or divorce, she and William will become the Queen and King of England. But! She won't have that title until her father-in-law to-be, Prince Charles of Wales, has had his turn.
The future Queen?
Kate being queen is a ways away. In the meantime, she and William will likely earn an honorary title after marrying. An article from People magazine speculates that some possible titles include the "dukedoms of Clarence, Cambridge and Sussex." These titles are "eminently suitable" for the couple. Why? HowStuffWorks explains that the titles of Duke and Duchess are among the highest order of nobility. If things go according to plan, eventually she will be the Queen. First, though, the title of duchess is most likely.
Who decides on the titles?
The Queen does, who else? An excellent article from the Sydney Morning Herald explains that if "the Prince surprises all and turns down a title, Kate would become HRH (Her Royal Highness) Princess William of Wales or Princess Catherine or Kate of Wales." Again, though, this is highly unlikely. When Prince Charles becomes king, it is believed that he will name William Prince of Wales, thus making Kate the Princess of Wales. Confused yet?
What about Harry?
Prince William's younger brother Harry is also in line to be King of England, but he is behind William. So, if and when he does marry, he won't be able to promise his bride-to-be the lofty title of queen. Sigh, the perils of being the younger brother. Still, we imagine that Harry is pleased to remain a prince. After all, it's a pretty sweet life. And as for what title Prince Harry's future wife will have, that's anybody's guess.
What about Prince Philip?
If your entire sum knowledge of royal lineage comes from "King Ralph," you might not understand why the Queen's husband, Prince Philip is not the King. Some online sources explain that this "the husband of a female monarch does not have any recognized special status, rank, or privileges." However, other sources argue that if the Queen wanted to appoint Philip as King she could. Sheesh, and we thought "Lost" was confusing.

Share Print Font: +-When you think of tainted seafood, you may think of the Gulf oil spill. But 80 percent of the fish and shrimp Americans eat actually comes from overseas — and a TODAY investigation that aired Tuesday found that some of that seafood may contain toxic chemicals that can cause serious health problems.
Footage taken by a U.S. advocacy group of seafood being raised in Vietnam, for example, showed fish in dirty sewage water, pumped with toxic antibiotics and banned drugs just to keep them alive, boosting production and driving down costs.
‘Disturbing number’
Ron Sparks is commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture in Alabama — one of the few states that tests imported seafood for drugs like chloramphenicol, nitrofurans and malachite green, chemicals so toxic to humans that they’re banned in all food. “In some cases, between 40 and 50 percent of our tests will come out positive,” Sparks said. “That’s a disturbing number.”

..State tests in Oklahoma, Mississippi and Georgia show similar results, all targeting seafood with the worst record of contamination: shrimp, catfish, crabmeat and tilapia imported to the U.S. from China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia — ending up in American restaurants and grocery stores in many cases, officials say.
“Unfortunately, consumers can’t tell if any of these compounds are in their seafood,” said Joe Basile, a seafood chemist for the Alabama Department of Agriculture. “You can’t smell it, can’t taste it, you can’t cook it out.”
Scientists say that over time, eating seafood contaminated with such chemicals could cause anemia, cancer and even birth defects.
The Food and Drug Administration says that the risks are long-term and not fully understood. While the FDA is responsible for keeping the nation’s food supply safe, TODAY’s investigation found that the FDA tests less than 2 percent of imported seafood.
“I would certainly suggest that the FDA do more,” Sparks said.
‘Cat-and-mouse game’
Government tests show that U.S. seafood is free of these contaminants, but as far back as 2007, a congressional report found that “seafood imports remain especially problematic” and that the “FDA lacks sufficient resources and authority to ensure food safety.”
The FDA declined to speak with TODAY on camera, but said it is doing the best it can, targeting its testing on companies and countries that are repeat offenders and rejecting their products until they are proven safe. Yet the problem keeps happening: In fact, according to test results obtained by NBC News, this year alone 8 percent of the seafood the FDA tested from China was tainted, and 16 percent of seafood tested from Taiwan was tainted.

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain's Prince William is to marry his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year, Buckingham Palace said Tuesday, ending months of media speculation about the couple's plans to wed.
William, 28, the elder son of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, and Middleton, 28, daughter of self-made entrepreneurs, became engaged while on holiday in Kenya last month.
"The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton," Charles's office said in a statement.
"The wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course."
The statement said William had informed Queen Elizabeth and also sought the permission of Middleton's father.
The Queen and William's grandfather, Prince Philip, said they were delighted at the news, while a cabinet meeting held by Prime Minister David Cameron was interrupted by a call from Buckingham Palace with the announcement.
"The prime minister is delighted to hear the news and has passed on his best wishes to the happy couple," Cameron's spokesman said.
William, who is currently serving as a helicopter search-and-rescue pilot in the Royal Air Force, met Middleton when they shared a house at university in Scotland in 2001.
They split up in 2007 because, newspapers said, Middleton, who has been dubbed "waity Katie" by the British tabloid press, was getting fed up of waiting for William to propose, but they soon got back together.
William has previously said he did not want to get married until he was 28, an age he reached in June.
Following the wedding, the couple will live in North Wales so the prince can continue his service with the RAF.
The engagement has been long predicted and rumors have abounded for months that an announcement was imminent.

Liahona team bags first prize for youth in business
15 Nov 2010, 13:39
Nuku'alofa, Tonga:
FOUR Tongan students have won a trip to go to New Zealand this week after creating a winning business plan manufacturing trendy handbags for Tonga's "Youth in Business Dream Big Challenge 2010."
Liahona High School's Polytexture team: seventh formers, Kepueli Huhane, Alexandria Finau, Susan Walter and Faeamani won a five days trip from November 15-20 as their grand prize in the inaugural event under a program initiated by the Tonga Chamber of Commerce which gives students an opportunity to learn how to run a business
The Polytexture team, operating their business out of Liahona, said on November 11, their bags sell for $18 pa'anga each and had to date generated up to $500 in sales revenue. "This comes in and rotates into paying the salary of our six employees who are students and buying of material for our handbags," they said.
They will take their bags to market and sell in New Zealand and are still accepting local orders as well.
In New Zealand the Polytexture team will meet other teams competing in the Young Enterprise Scheme, a school-based business program in New Zealand Secondary schools, and share experiences about their successful business plans.
Seed Capital
The Youth in Business Dream Big Challenge began when nine competing schools presented their business plans to judges on May 24. The judges were Robina Nakao, Paula Taumoepeau, Fr 'Aisake Vaisima, and Arthur Hubbard, Chair of the Bankers Association.
On May 31 initial seed capitals were awarded to the four finalist teams to set up their businesses, manufacture their products and start selling them to the public.
Liahona High School was awarded a seed capital of $3,000 with their business proposal for "PolyTexture". 'Apifo'ou College was awarded $2,000 pa'anga for Hepi Jojo Sparkling Looks, designing original screen-printed T-shirts. Tupou High School received $1,500 for Organic Greens that grows and sells organic seedlings and plants. And the Ocean of Light received $1,000 for Project Faith to manufacture coconut desserts.
The seed capital was the start of the competition and teams were given the opportunity up to the end September to use the capital and develop their businesses and manufacture their products.
Marketing strategies
According to the Tonga Chamber of Commerce, on September 27 the judging was based on monthly financial reports and on the oral presentation where the students described their activities and marketing strategies to the judges.
Paula Taumoepeau said the judging was particularly difficult and that all the teams deserved to win. Some business plans were considered to be of higher quality than some business proposals presented to the banks for financial support.
On September 30, the Liahona Polytexture team was announced as the winner during a final prize giving ceremony held at the Air New Zealand office in Nuku'alofa.
The program organized by the Tonga Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with the Secondary Schools Principals Association and the Ministry of Education and sponsored by the New Zealand High Commission, TCCI and local businesses.
